EXCITING LAST PLACE HOCKEY DEBATE
Wanye
October 26 2010 09:52PM

We submit the following points of order:
- Although it didn't result in a shootout win, that was seriously one hell of a comeback.
- Jordan Eberle is miles in the lead as the best rookie on the team, with MPS in a solid second place.
- If you agree that the plan for the season is to play 82 games of Last Place Hockey, then that was a dandy of a game.
- Flames Broadcasts are mind numbingly sterile. Seriously.

Feel free to discuss.

An Interesting take on the Battle of Alberta, well almost interesting. New Oiler Spill: The Oilers Flames Game From My Perspective
i am here to admit that as soon as I saw Peter with that voice and Charlie with that empty head i muted the sound. What a perfect time i thought to watch the crappy picture on Lowest or No Definition and hear the Jack&Bob Show on 630CHED. To my amazement 630s' broadcast is a half minute behind the TV broadcast.I came to blame it on the Stooopid Calgary! It's crew sucks! Each and every thing about that town of cows Sucks!!!...but i digress >>> Kudos BuckSevenFive...i bloody howelled when i read "Horc telling stories to the kids about the "OLDEN days" when we draft RNH next year ...as for 'back pressure'? Simmer's a chiropractor i guess but even our Bob Stauffer sez "on the back TRACK" sometimes and that sure confuses me...we need to have him stop that too?
next stop OHIO! might we do a deal and leave someone behind for an 'asset'?
Imagine my surprise as I roll out of bed this morning, and sleepily refresh ON to find that the first comment in the new blog posting contains no information except for my address from when I lived down near Southland, 12 years ago.
*Wide, Crazy, Paranoid Eyes*
I'm watching you.
I hate Roger Millions. He is such a cheerleader its ridiculous.
Sportsnet pisses me off. They make us listen to the Flames crew last night (which I can sort of understand) and with their weekly Flames show. Why don't they have a similar show for the Oilers?
I liked Cogliano's game last night. He is starting to look a little like Jared Stoll on the forecheck. Obviously a ways to go, but he was aggressive.
Peckham did an effective job as an "Iginla Buster". He was very physical with him all night.
The Oilers had no business being in this game. Bulin stood on his head, but in reality there were a lot of Calgary chances that just didn't quite click.
Looks like Whitney is stuggling with all the icetime. Unfortunately, not a lot of other options.
Sam is continuing to develop. Much more physical and confident.
Hemsky seems lost. Great moves but a lot of turnovers and little puck support for his team mates.
I get the point that the plan is to tank this year, and grab Larsson or Nugent-Hopkins, but something has to be done with the defense.
Strudwick may be a great team guy, but he has no business defending NHL players. Maybe if they keep him behind the centerline...
The best move the Oil could make is send down Strudwick and bring up Belle. Send down a goalie and bring up Reddox while you're at it too.

I think bringing up Omark would be the better choice. We know what Reddox can do.
Looks like Renney has some coaching to do on shootouts. Not one of the three Oilers had an actual shot on goal. Hemsky had the puck poke-checked off his stick because he was in too close and Eberle and Penner guessed wrong on backhand shots.
Don't know what Renney can do about all the turnovers, some of them because too many players were soft on the puck. Gagne had a better game, but still too fancy stickhandling. It was nice to see Penner wake up in the third period and contribute.
With five straight loses, can we expect call-ups from OKC? Particularly on defence.
Tough luck on Ebereles shorthanded goal streak coming to an end...but each of his goals have been on the backhand.
I like Larson 220 lbs the guy is already the size of most NHL players if that is muscle oh my would I love to see him and MPS in the opposing end with Omark and a another Swede forward. Could he be a Calder Man? Or later the Norris? I also like Jamie Oleksiak as the first pick in the second round. I want to see him in front of Kipper or Luongo blasting a shot from the blue line.(Also remember that big boys often bloom late and can be great pickups in the draft.)I also like Adam Lowry of the WHL at forward I like thinking hockey players and he is big to boot. If those players play big it would sure help the smurf problem(Big Wins games and we have speed). Then if only Roy would pan out.
These are things that cannot be denied:
1. Peter Loubardias is a nasal voiced pencil necked hack who has no business calling hockey games.
2. Charlie Simmer is functionally retarded (or "mentally hilarious--I can't remember who on ON told me that one)but that hair helmet is glorious and nobody can take that away from him.
3. The CBC has strange hiring policies. I don't care if Cassie Campbell won gold medals she is terrible. Kevin Weekes is a Justin Bieber fan and that says it all.
If you disagree with any of these comments I will have to fight you.
EDIT: Please check out my Movember page. To donate click here
TSN should really do something about this homer - Peter Loubardias..... Does he need the job so bad that he has to keep his tongue up the Flames collective butt in all his broadcasts? No matter what happens on the ice he put a positive slant on it for the Flames, or just plane invents one in his head.
Good game last night, but terrible coaching in the shootout. It was obvious watching the game that the puck was bouncing, so IMO Renney should have been having his players shoot on the shootout, not deke. I know it's not really a coach's place to dictate what a player should do in a specific play like a shootout attempt, but that tip may have led to a goal, as all our guys tried to deke only to have the puck bounce, and the only goal scored by them was with a shot.
Just an observation, but good for the Oil to come back for the point. Eberle looks awesome!
I'll happily watch that brand of losing hockey any day.
I hate Roger Millions. He is such a cheerleader its ridiculous.

@Oontyah
uh no.. second shorty was forehand...
No wonder I hate Calgarians. They love Roger Millions
Is it just me or was that someone else wearing #77 last night... you know the guy blocking shots, making passes, and taking guys out along the boards hard.
And Peckham was good in his first game back as well.
Still had a lot of misses all in all but the third period was glorious firewagon hockey that I hope we see more of this year.
That being said it is probaly in Renney's best interest to train some systems because they aren't learning a lot playing that end to end rush hockey other than Khabby's got their back(no pun intended)going the other way. Sure is nice to know it's an option they have in the tool box that they can be successful with.
from the recent TSN piece on Halls "pro" adjustments
"I'm not too focused on what my stat-line is right now," Hall said. "You have to be patient. I know that.
"People may judge you on your rookie season, but at the end of the day, it's not about what your rookie season is. It's how you do in your prime. I know I'm going to be a good player along the line."
Personally I always find it foolhardy to dismiss the present when the future has yet to be written..... but hey.. Im not 18 making millions either
for all of the Belle boosters I saw OKC play in Toronto on Saturday and while buddy is seriously big and an excellent skater he's not much of a hockey player
Not to say that bringing him up to replace Strudwick or Vandermeer isn't a bad idea but he has the proverbial million dollar set of tools with the ten cent head. Bad reads, poor decision making. He can get away with it in the AHL because he is so big and fast but I don't see him as an NHL dman. Just my opinion though. I'd bring him up, play him seventy games. Maybe the light goes on at some point.
Just a thought but did Renney maybe make his decisions on who goes out in the SO based on how the boys played in the game?
For instance; your guys don't put out a consistent effort I'm going to give you less of a chance to come away with the reward (win) so I'll put out the 1 for 6 Dustin Penner.
Put in a solid effort I'll get you guys a chance to win and put out Horcoff at over 50% percentage.
I know, kind of hair brained but...
for the better part of two periods that wasn't "exciting last place hockey," it was just last place hockey. And then, Eberle scores and BOOM!!! EXCITING LAST PLACE HOCKEY!!!!
It's one thing to be patient, acknowledge that that this is a very young team, that mistakes will be made, Cups aren't won overnight, etc. I am firmly in this camp. It's another thing, however, to be incapable of the basic fundamentals of own-zone hockey, like not giving the puck away 500000 times a game. Those aren't rookie mistakes by Whitney, Vandermeer, Foster, etc., because, well, they aren't rookies. Peckham's our best defenseman right now. Yeah. I said it.
@bdhs
we have enough guys up here waiting for the light to go on
Point #1 - SQUEE
Point #2 - SSSQQQQQUUUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Point #3 - Followed the gameplan to a T, provide exciting hockey while still coming up just short.
Point #4 - I feel like we should be compensated for having to sit through that. by any chance does anyone know how many times we have to see that, if again?, or how many times those FLAMERS will have to watch the Oil broadcast?
It would be nice to see a win once and a while, but good lessons for the kids climbing back into this one.
Instead of listening to the Calgary color commentators, which I could only do for the first half of the game, I switched to the radio and listened to Jack Michaels. It must be the trick because not only was the announcing more exciting, but we started to play awesome when I started listening to Michaels. Just sayin...
I just want to know of one team that has worse defensive zone coverage.
Then at a minimum I can say “Well, at least we aren’t the ________”
Try watching the Ducks
@RossCreekNation
Peter Loubourdias? He of the "Skkeeeyores"?
I can't stand listening to Loubardias and Simmer.
Maybe it's the ingrained homer-ness of sports broadcasts (like listening to Bob Cole call a Leafs game, or Jim Hughson call a Canucks game), but I can't see Flames fans complaining about Quinn and Debrusk the same way we complain about the fLames broadcast team.
you didn't have radio delay problems listening to CHED with the TV muted? mine was dreadful... thirty forty seconds behind TV ...couldn't listen
was there a trick to it?
Lombardius an upgrade from previous Flames broadcasters , as he at least seems to know the names of opposition players and not just the team . Even has insight on other teams players he shares at times which other previous never seem to, and gives occasional credit to other team and it's players . Simmer comes across as rather dense and one sided to a fault , like Millions . Oilers have one not much better than Simmer ,but certainly not worse - not naming whom that is . Some bias is expected, but much is over the limits of good broadcasing when they only see and broadcast from home team perspective all over the ice ,as well as commentary inbetween .
I disagree on the commentary to a point... as good as some of the past were like Bob Cole... I also found him and Harry Neale were fricking Maple Leaf homers all over the place... even though they were supposed to be doing national telecasts...
I find Cuthbert, McGuire, Ferraro, and the rest of the TSN crew way better than the Sportsnet Group and kick the crap out of CBC...
Seriously... Mark Lee and the washed up former NHL goalie have got to be the worst in the NHL.. there's a reason CBC lost their rights for CFL games.. their broadcasts sucked.. and Lee and Walby were the worst of them all. Sorry boring and didn't know what they were talking about... thankfully CBC doesn't do as many Oil games as the other networks so we can breathe easiser..
Jim and Simmer are pretty good too... I just wished they would have kept them to the late game like they started off instead of doing the Maple Craps games....
Peter Loubardius + Roger Millions are painful.
At least with Gino you know that you're going to get a goofy comment - and that the guys in the booth (Kevin & Co) are going to laugh at him.
And seriously - Roger...in High Def widescreen - you look like you're wearing hockey equipment under your suit (even though we know you're not).
I'm not sure if anyone else noticed this but during the pregame show which(of course) was called Flames Connected Roger Millions interviewed Jordan Eberle and at the end said and I quote 'I know your from Calgary so alot of people here will be cheering for you' I mean seriously if your going to be a sports broadcaster you should know the score. Ebs is from Regina. Hallsie is from Calgary... I just wish he would've corrected him right there on the spot, instead he just looked at him with an odd look and skated away.
@Oilers4ever
Bob Cole lost it years ago. I remember back in university (mid 90's) listening to him call the games and he was easily 10 seconds behind and unable to say any player's names other than the leafs.
Roger Millions is a homer but I don't mind him if only because I think of the video of him shouting "C*&ksucker" over and over again. For wahtever reason someone having a Tourette's like rant on TV makes me want to root for them.
If i can deal with principe's puns I can deal with anybody (except Loubardias, Cassie Campbell and Kevin Weekes.)
Yes, press the pause buttons for 34 seconds, then press play, really are some nation that dumb or just that stupid, shakes head in disbelief..... dumbass.
Maybe Allan Watt will and Patrick LaForge will reconsider the costs of flying Quinn and Debrusk on Westjet or Oiler1, or maybe just drive..... the hardcosts of production were already absorbed by sportsnet, put the oilers broadcast on the companion channel so Quinn and Debrusk can be homers and appease the nation, this was a no brainer that was lost in the Oiler coporate culture with their head in the sand.
Maybe the cost of Quinn's and Debrusk salary are just too high, when Oiler brass will allow outside commentary on their team, when other options are present...... cheap, cheap, cheap, goes the birdie.
Eberle was from Regina and then his parents moved to Calgary when he was young. He graduated high school in Calgary.
Roger Millions is slimmer than when he did the sports cast in Saskatoon for QC8.
Seriously, if you plug your nose and speak as you pinch a loaf, it sounds dead on excaclty like the Flame announcer!
I completely agree! Worst bunch of D-Zone play I've seen in a while. Not just on the PK either. Peckham was driving me nutz. So casual with the puck in his own end, like he's out there for the morning skate or something. Not just him either. The forwards weren't helping out on the other blue line. So many giveaways resulting in odd man rushes.
Also, GOD BLESS JORDAN EBERLE.
At least Gene doesn't take himself seriously...at all. I remember when he first started and he asked Doug Weight "How do you feel right now?" right after they got their asses handed to them. And Doug looked at him and said "How do you think I feel Gene?" Since then he has been a lot less "fartcatcher" and a lot more goofy Gene.
roughneck - oh I agree, just more of a cautionary tale for those who think Belle or Petoit are the answers. There's a reason they are veterans in the AHL.
Plante is the guy to watch for the call later in the year I think.
But having said that is there any reason to play Vandermeer or Strudwick? They're terrible, which we knew. Maybe Belle is better than them. He can certainly skate better than either guy.
I listened to the radio while watching the game...the radio was actually a few seconds ahead of the TV broadcast, but it wasn't that big of deal...way better ahead than behind.
I thought Oilers fans were supposed to be quite intelligent with alot of hockey knowledge for the most part.
I can't believe there are actually people out there that think Renney should be teaching his players what to do in the SO. Maybe they should get the stickboys input on what to do as well. If the coach has to tell his players what to do on breakaways perhaps those players are in the wrong profession.
Though lastnight was definately not the greatest of games for most of the players, the results were what a true intelligent Oil fan should be asking for. A few goals scored, the kids looking good and another one in the loss column. Though personally I would prefer the losses to be in regulation, we don't need the extra point.
His family moved to Calgary when he was 14. He played one midget season there and then he was back in Regina playing for the Pats. He goes back to Calgary in the off-season since that's where his parents live. He looked unimpressed when Millions said that, but then Eberle looks unimpressed about a lot of things most of the time. Love his stoner eyes, haha.
Listen to him talk about the Riders if you think there's any chance he's not a Sask boy.
I miss Ray Ferraro on the commentary. Why the hell were we subjected to that brutal pro-Flames play-by-play??? That's wasn't RSFlames we were watching! And you can't ever listen to CHED at the same time b/c the timing IS off.
Since Nation readers may subsribe for television feed via shaw (cable), bell(sat), or Shawdirect (sat), or peasant Telus TV the delay can be forward or behind, depending on your provider....
