Leafs' Scoring Chances through Nov. 27/10, by Individual

November 29 2010 09:39AM

We've gone by the first quarter pole of the regular season, so I thought now would be a good time to see where the Maple Leafs stand as far as scoring chances go. To get the gist of how chances are counted, see my first post at LeafsNation. We'll be looking over player statistics in each game state: Even-Strength, Power-Play, and Penalty-Kill. Two-man advantages are unaccounted for in the data.

To see last season's results, click the following links:

1) 2009-10 Even Strength
2) 2009-10 Power-Play
3) 2009-10 Penalty-Kill

This season's stats below...

No surprise at who the top 3 (regular) forwards are at this point in time. Anyone who's followed the Leafs for a bit this season knows that the line of Grabovski-MacArthur-Kulemin have been carrying the mail.  Together, those three were 65-40 in chances (61.9 %) which is a great ratio.

Versteeg has been disappointing so far, as he holds the worst CA/60 among forwards at 18.24.  Phil Kessel hasn't been much better at that aspect (18.13) but at least he has provided enough offense to break even.  The "bottom sixers" are really getting dinged, in the case of Tim Brent and Fredrik Sjostrom, that is in large part due to the tough icetime they've been given by Ron Wilson. Colby Armstrong lined up mostly with those two before he got injured.

Does Colton Orr really need to be in the lineup every game?

Beauchemin has the best even strength CA/60 on the team at 13.14, even though he tends to be one of the favourite targets among those hunting for scapegoats. Komisarek has played tougher minutes this year and his chance numbers have taken a real hit as a result.

Mike Brown has far and away been the best of the regular PK forwards. Sjostrom isn't enjoying the success he had last year, maybe playing with Tim Brent has something to do with it. Zigomanis was doing an excellent job before he got sent down, I thought, and the numbers back up my viewpoint, albeit within small sample size.

Poor Jonas Gustavsson, the Leafs seem to be making life a lot more difficult for him than Giguere so far.

* There's been three games so far that I haven't recorded data for, two of them were games against the NY Rangers and Florida Panthers.  For those, I've lifted data from George Ays and Derek Zona, respectively.

Slava Duris started writing at his blog "Under the Helmet of Slava Duris" in May of 2009. He is currently engaged in a project to count scoring chances for the Toronto Maple Leafs this season. Slava chose his moniker in tribute to Vitezslav "Slava" Duris, a defenceman who defected from Czechoslovakia in the early 1980s to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs and was known for wearing one of the goofiest looking helmets in Leafs history.

Beauchemin has been ok. Komisarek passes more to the opposition than to his team-mates. The chances for the Maple Leafs is what has always bothered me. They get plenty of chances. In all the time I have watched the Leafs, they have lacked finish. I yell at my TV "Oh great they ALMOST scored again". Don't you miss finish-guys like Mogilny, Sundin, Andreychuk and ..............?
