We may get things started earlier than 10 if notable deals occur.
Looking forward to it. Can't wait to see how many draft picks the Flamers jettison today and how many defencemen they pick up.
Woot! Woot!
Nice format BTW; or at least so far...
Nice, hope my work doesn't block it.
This is awesome, we now get a chance to read comments from the ON comment gallery without people taking time to carefully think through their ideas and edit their text.
note: :)
@book¡e
The comments in ON while are well thought out (for the most part), they are INFINITELY better than the Reporters. For example, Steve Simmons just said Smid is our BEST defensemen. HOW?!?
True, although Willis and I have MODERATING POWER over all the comments, so...
@Starving Student
I think he meant to say that Smid is our best 25-yr old defenseman.
Any other trades of significance to speak of?? (ON will be my only means of info until a brief 30 minute window at noon.)
any word on the ryan jones extension offer? how much was offered
Let's get this party started!
This is your only source of information?
Ok then, the Oilers traded Penner, Hemsky, and DD to Calgary for Staois and a 7th round pick.
Via DAVE MITCHELL...
Word is Ryan Jones had 8 hours to decide on 'short' extension for minimal $. He declined.
Is Tambo going to pull a K Lowe and trade away our best player for bit pieces, and then turn around and not sign our gritty 3rd line winger for minimal dollars, instead letting him go to Calgary in the offseason? Looks to be so. Stupid. Can we hire Daryl Sutter to be our GM?
@Team Couturier
Can we hire Daryl Sutter to be our GM?
You sure can.
i was just gonna mention another glencross type of situation with jones.
F'in Tambillini is going to lose Jones over a couple 100K.
Hey, play nice bookje! Some of us still have to work today and have limitted internet usage. Which makes me a sad panda.
confirm or deny " all oilers are accounted for at pratice
Good sign that Tambellini is being realistic about Jones. Offer made, time to trade.
Probably reasonable to do so. No sense overpaying a guy. I guess it depends on the $$.
Was he good in the room?
Lose what? A player having a career year whose top end is probably 15 goals or 25 points? He's a typical transitional player.
He's not he answer on the 3rd line. We could have gotten the same from Potulny.
Wasn't the same said about Brodziak and Glencross?!?
Keep Indiana around this time!! Don't allow another division rival a chance to pick up a 3rd line grinder who'll be a thorn in our side for the next decade!
@fuck off
Brodziak wasnt UFA, Glencross brought more elements to his game but wasnt eligible to be traded because he was a waiver pick up.
Jones isnt a centreman and isnt physical. He's fast and has been shooting the lights out (relatively), that's it. He isnt an effective penalty killer either. He can move up and down the lineup in a jam, but isnt effective enough to stay in one place full-time. AND, he apparently just turned down a contract! Why are we even talking about this guy? It's a no brainer now. Move him. He obviously wants to cash in on his unsustainable shooting percentage/career year.
@Archaeologuy
It's still a mistake. The Oil have the cap room to pay him out even if he gets a lofty arbitration award for next season. During 11-12 we'll all get a further view of what exactly the Rockstar hair can bring to the ice. Trade or sign him cheap next year, he at least deserves to be given a thurough observation period. One good (possibly overrated or over achieving) year isn't enough to make a proper decision on Indiana's future with the quest for the Holy Grail.
@fuck off
And when he walks for nothing on July 1st? Will it still be a mistake then?
problem with that is the trend-setting. it tells other players that with Edmonton management is only one way or the highway. Broz, Glencros, Smith, Rollie now Jones... at some point Tambo needs to show that he appreciates somebody, anybody, well enough to give a little in order to keep him.
Robbie Shremp will get a sun tan in ATL...
@fuck off
There is no arbitration award for Unrestricted Free Agents. They can go anywhere for any price.
@dragon
The only trend that matters in this situation is the trend of watching players leave for nothing. It left the Oilers decimated after the 06 run when all those vets walked away from the Oil. It wasnt just Pronger leaving. It was everyone.
It's bad policy to let players leave for nothing, especially when they might have SOME value in the league.
And let's keep in mind that we're talking about a bit player, not a name player. The league doesnt pay attention to how the Ryan Jones' of the world are treated by their clubs.
I'm with Arch on this one. Jones had a career year, but I'm skeptical that he can do it consistently. I'd like to know what the offer was, but consider that Cogliano got $1M this season and quietly became the 7th-highest point-total on the team. Jones has 72% of those points, doesn't play special-teams as well as Cogs, isn't a center, and made the same coin. And people are all up for ditching Cogs but they want to give Jones a raise? Huh?
Even discounting the free-agent market, we have guys on the farm that can put up 18 points in 62 games. Heck, Reddox is on pace for that.
Brett Carson (Car) claimed by the Flames.
Live Chat is underway.
I don't disagree in this particular instance. I'd just like to see Tambo show some flexibility when dealing with players that put in the work. Yes, Jones had a career year, but not because was Sam Gagned on the power play every game; he worked his but off and he deserves the credit for it.
We are not a hard-to-play-against team, because hard-to-play-against players are not rewarded.
Raw talent is. To obvious effect.
Same thing we've been whining for for years.
Quailty 4th liner that can chip in some offense.
@OB1 Team Yakopov - F.S.T.N.F
I've been whining about our depth at C, specifically in regards to the top 2 lines. 4th liners are literally the last thing I'm concerned about when it comes to players.
1-2C, 1-3D, 1G, 4C, New Away Jerseys.
From left to right that is my order of importance.
That's nice.
We've bled NHL'ers for years. I'd like to keep a couple.
@OB1 Team Yakopov - F.S.T.N.F
But Jones hasnt been any better an NHLer than Potulny. Where were the tears for Potulny?
Potulny was a one trick pony that had a decent shot and could score a little on the PP. He's in the AHL this year, likely where he belongs.
I want to keep Jones, you want to move him. We've been over it a dozen times. Theirs no need for you to comment on my post about it anymore.
Anyone care to opine on Brett Carson? I can't access the live chat today.
I love jonesy but that said, if you can get a 2nd or 3rd round pick, trade em. He doesnt give you enough of any one thing. Not overly physical, not great on the pk, doesnt drop the mitts and is over-achieving goal wise
Hes a freakin beauty but if he wants more cash, he'll have to go elsewhere
I made a post that is missing...
