NHLNumbers Logo Contest

With the launch of the new NHLNumbers blog and the continued development of the site's resources and functions, we figured it's time to update the graphics around here. Specifically, we're looking for a new logo for the site.

Now, we could have gone to some pro graphic designer and spent thousands of dollars only to be slightly disappointed by the outcome, but instead we're opening up the project to the Nation readers instead.

Here's what we need

- A logo that can be used on the site, on facebook and as an avatar on twitter. That means it needs to be more square than rectangular in shape.

- Something that works with the existing format and color scheme of NHLnumbers.com.

- A logo that doesn't violate current copyrights or trademarks. So no integrating or "borrowing" the NHL's official logo, for instance.

The Prize

For Alberta residents, we can offer gift certificates to the Pint in Edmonton, or Hudson's Taphouse in Edmonton and Calgary. For folks outside of Alberta, we can offer a modest cash prize of $100.

Of course, the primary prize will be the affection of the writers and contributors at NHLNumbers as well as the exposure of having your work seen by over 1 million unique visitors every year.

The Details

Send your entries to either Kent (Kent.wilson@gmail.com) or Derek (dpzona@gmail.com). The contest will be open until Sunday, May 27th at which point we'll post our favorites and solicit reader opinions. We'll decide the winner based on our own preferences as well as overall impressions.

Thanks and good luck everyone. We're looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

@D_broderant

I'm also surprised that the Network would consider spec design even in jest. I fear we'll soon see them drinking potable tap water to the detriment of bottled water companies.

Uh not quite sure how this comment thread turned into this but we are trying to have a perfectly legit contest to immortalize the logo design of one of our beloved citizens. We aren't harvesting logos for similar sites or intending to rip anyone off.

This was not designed to insult the graphic design industry to it's very core.

Lighten up a little fellas. You are being absurd.

M.s.

I may be ignorant in my understanding of the No!spec campian and I don't want to come off as insensitive, but as a someone who doesn't make his living as a graphic designer, I don't see why I should care about no!spec. To me the campaign sounds equivalent to big record companies saying you should't listen to music played by non-professionals because we want to be paid.

Oilersnation is offering compensation for the work, not offering any false presences that this could lead to future employment, and they aren't suggesting that all entries become their property... I agree that graphic designers are educated professionals, but I also believe that imagination plays a large role in creating something like a logo. I don't buy into the theory that 1 design submitted by a professional will necessarily be better than 10s of entries created by fans of this site (consumers of this product). Heck, professional designers have created some horrible hockey jersies dispite their education and the fact they make there living at it.

I don't want to offend anyone's convictions, because, well, I don't like offending anyone, period. And, I do understand your point, in principle.

That said, part of the charm of this place has always been the (relatively) friendly interaction between the writers, the people who run the site, and Joe Q. Poster. Contests are part of that interaction. Is this really any different from the PhotoShop contests? Those threads are site content with ads that get a fair amount of traffic. Are those crimes against the design industry, as well? We're mostly amateur goofballs, happily sweating over hot pixels without much promise of compensation. Realistically, with so many entries, the chances of winning are pretty low. I've never won one, but I've gotten a few laughs, and that's all I care about (that's a lie, actually—I want my Oodle Noodle party desperately). My real compensation is that this place exists, at all. It's a unique site. I like it. I don't have to pay to code, host, maintain, moderate, or administer this site. Yet, I get all the benefit of enjoying it.

Sweet deal.

I really don't see the need for the ghost of Mario Savio to stand on the steps of the Oilers Nation capitol and tell us to throw our bodies into Wanye's gears to protest a logo for pizza contest. Everyone should follow their conscience. Totally cool with that. But the Nation's conscience is clear on this. My $0.02.

Peace. Out.

Hey, this is really disappointing to see from the Nation Network. As a graphic designer I am frustrated that this network would use spec work for logo design, a practice that has been universally condemned by designers. I would recommend you check out the NO!SPEC campaign and hope that this contest gets called off. Logo designers spend their life learning their trade and spec work benefits no one. http://www.no-spec.com/about/

First, I would like to chastise YOU for coming here to Oilers nation. Don't you realize that hacks like Wanye and Lowetide are putting legitimate university trained journalists out of business. I mean, don't you owe it to those professionals to forgo the quality writing and information that you get here so that you protect the career's of the Terry Jones of the world?

The owners of this website are looking for a product, they have offered up a price. If you like the price and want to take a chance, then go for it. If you don't then don't. If your industry cannot compete with masses of rank amateurs than I would suggest your industry is in great trouble and that change is in order.

The real problem here is that you have an overblown sense of the value of logo creation and how difficult it is. Yes, a terrible logo is a bad thing for a company and a good logo is helpful, BUT creating a good logo is not that hard if you are artistically inclined and have some people around that are empathetic to the sensitivities of others.

The London 2012 logo is a great example of how stupid things get in industry. At a cost of about £400,000 you get 'a logo'.

I am just stunned how some people think they are entitled to something simply because THEY chose to enter into a career in it.

You could spend years learning the trade of shoelace tying or grass raking too, but the reality is that a good portion of the population can do it as well, so your years of practice are of little value.

I apologise for being a bit terse here, but I think it takes a level of idiocy seldom seen to come to a site for free for years and then complain about how they do business because they don't want to pay you for something.

@m.s. I agree with you as a fellow graphic designer. Spec work, while it seems innocent enough with something like this, should still be discouraged as it is a detriment to our profession as a whole. I signed up to post this comment, thanks for your time.

I came to suggest logos that utilize Jokinen's gameface but I'm a bit behind on my union dues. Is it okay if I still comment?

What he's trying to say is, you want a very professional looking logo and you're only willing to pay a hundred bucks for it.

We should feel fortunate they're willing to put out a hundred bucks. Can you even take your girlfriend out for dinner for a hundred bucks nowadays?

Kent - Am I correct in assuming that we can use the letters NHL in the logo without that being a problem.

"Logo designers spend their life learning their trade and spec work benefits no one."

Oh boy. Wait until this one finds out about us using Wikimedia Commons for photos. Photos taken by normal people, a practice universally condemned by photographers...

I might give it a shot. I want a website yet, but not really to learn how to build one. Exciting period. Coyotes were flying. Was wondering how they could beat Chi; missed series. Will miss Wiley Coyote mask if knocked out. I like Wiley vs Bugs as there is some adult banter. Kermit selling Grover glasses was good. Yandle for Conn Smythe if unthinkable happens.

The four Jets on the left and right can be dragged to fit a square box, or an upper and lower light blue and dark blue bar, like the theatre option of watching a DVD, can be drawn, to make a square. Wanting to spray paint blood but cdn Jets have hardly ever been deployed to bomb, so not a good idea. Sweet $100. That is like $1000 to general labourers. Is the gift certificate much more?

Aww, I thought it was a Jetsnation logo contest. I drew 6 Jets filled in by team colours and a puck with 7 Maple leafs. Does anyone want a free logo?
