Oilers deal Ladislav Smid, sign Ilya Bryzgalov

Jonathan Willis

The Edmonton Oilers have traded Ladislav Smid to the Calgary Flames. Reportedly, they have also signed goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov.

The Trade

On it's own, this deal is a clear win for the Calgary Flames.

The only legitimate NHL player in this trade is Ladislav Smid. He has his faults; in particular he isn't an especially good puck-mover and has always been at his best when paired with a defenceman who can take primary responsibility for that part of the game. With that said, he is a legitimate middle-pairing defensive defenceman and a welcome physical presence, a guy who can kill penalties and has played some tough minutes over the years.

Olivier Roy is a marginal NHL goaltending prospect at this point, a guy still struggling to prove he can play regularly at the AHL level. Laurent Brossoit, an ex-Edmonton Oil King, is in his first year as a professional but is a better prospect long-term. Neither of these guys really matter in the NHL picture in the short term.

Roman Horak adds centre depth. He has 82 games of NHL experience but has spent most of this season with Abbotsford; he'll help the Barons a lot at centre right now and provides the Oilers with a second plausible call-up at that position (along with Linus Omark.

In the balance: the Oilers cleared cap space, but their NHL roster just got poorer.

Bryzgalov

Ilya Bryzgalov is a pretty good goalie. We don't have contract details yet, but the best guess is that we're looking at a one-year deal somewhere in the $2.0 - $2.5 million per year range. This isn't a totally surprising move; Jason Gregor reported it might happen not that long ago on this site.

Over the last five seasons, Bryzgalov has posted a 0.923 save percentage at even-strength. That makes him a little better than Devan Dubnyk and puts him in the same range as guys like Jonathan Quick, Carey Price and Corey Crawrford over that span. The difference is that Bryzgalov also famously imploded after being signed to a amassive ocntract by Philadelphia.

This is a good addition, particularly if he's being brought in to compete with Devan Dubnyk for playing time. It's not enough to explain the Smid trade, unless the contract is horrific.

That's where we are now. The Oilers are better in net at the moment, significantly worse on defence and if another move doesn't come this has been a very bad night for Craig MacTavish. Another move is probably coming, and it will need to be a good one to make up for what's already happened.

You’re completely right, people have watched Smid play in the top 4 pairing for so long they actually think he is top four. He would be bottom pairing on a good team. He has also been playing poorly this season. Best of luck to him but if Bryzgalov even plays average, this will be a good move.

I don't mind they traded Smid because he was an average defenceman. However, if they don't make another move then MacT got bent over big time.

I know MacT is a smart guy, so why do I have this bad feeling in my gut?

I watched LB in all of the WJHL playoff games leading up to the Oilkings winning the cup.

LB literally stole a few close games and made some huge saves. I am by no means a goaltending expert but he kinda looked like Patrick Roy with his size and style and the team always played confidently in front of him.

It's no surprise the Oilkings fortunes turned the minute LB was signed to the NHL and Jarry started getting the starts.

We got a quality prospect, in fact excellent quality, I just hope we don't ruin him in the last part of his development..

Relax everyone. This season is done anyway. Just consider the rest of the way a 'preseason' of sorts.

Brossoit is a better goalie than Roy. Good. Smid is a #4 Dman and he was exposed playing in a higher role in Edmonton. His faults are very aparent: slow, poor passing, marginal defensive zone coverage. His position as a #4 Dman is redundant with Ference, Schultz Jr., Belov, Petry, Larson, Fedun, Mirancin & Klefbom. Don't forget that he was being paid $3.5mil: that's far to high for someone of his skill at the #4 d-spot. Sadly his intangibles will be missed. He wanted to be in Etown, married a gal from here. He'll be missed. Sadly I hope this doesn't show that Oiler management has no loyalty to the rest of the league. I fear it may.

Horak is good at hockey, better than Smid (even though they play different positions). He's a smart hockey player. He'll be a decent fit at 4th line C. Certainly better than Acton & Smyth.

Bryz aside, this isn't a fleece job on MacT.

The Bryz signing, honestly, I can't imagine what a media frenzy this will be when they play in Philly. I seriously hope he starts. I know DE won't play him but it'd be amazing drama for the two bottomfeeder teams.

As far as I have read in wiki, any pro contract signed counts as one of the 50, irrelevant if it is a minor league deal or not. There is a 90 player limit that each team has which includes all signed and unsigned draft picks, players in College/ University or any player drafted within the last 2 NHL seasons which teams have exclusive rights to for the two years.

Makes me wonder what the potential deal with Philly was at the draft that MacT considered a bad trade. I thought someone said Smid and both 2nd round picks for Coburn. That would be way better than this but it would have capped the oilers out.

there is a difference between the oilers signing a 2 way contract to AHL and OKC signing. Cheechoo never counted against our cap because he was ppty of OKC and NOT the Oilers. He could never get called up, and trades were done by AHL. The only difference here is that Katz owns the AHL franchise. Its not like that league wide

We get cap room for Bryz and room for prospects to show their stuff. We're overloaded with 2nd/3rd pairing dmen. I really liked #5, but something had to give. Lots of talk about Horc (roasted by Datsuyk yesterday) and Hemmer and the 'culture of losing'. Smid's been here since the cup run too. Hope it's not like what happened when we traded Matt Greene. Who knows, maybe Horak could help the PK now

Arcobello, Pitlck and Fedun. All three do different things and bring something new to the table. They are all more effective than several regulars.

Today, the Panthers fired Kevin Dineen. Everybody in the hockey world is talking about how a great teacher he is with the young players. Maybe it would be a good next move for MacT to hire him to replace Smith or Bucky.

After he is done trading actual NHL players for spare parts that is.

As a Calgarian and die hard Flames fan thank you Oilers for the free gift!

We get the best player in the trade and at worst a stating 4-5 defensemen who has some size and a bit of nastiness the Flames require.

What are you getting in return??

Broisoit...young guy long term project. Would not have made the Flames as we have 2 prospects ahead of him. Recently was burned in Abbotsford in 2 lopsided games and appears to have lost his confidence hence sent to Anchorage of ECHL.

Horak..hard working young centre. Could not crack a weak Flames roster. Long term 4th line LW (not Centreman - too small).

Hey. I'm not a big fan of Smid but he is an actual NHL player...likely a 5-6 D on a decent team.

But he was traded for Horak, who you can find in the remainder bin at K-Mart anytime you like and a G prospect who is many years away, if ever.

The old saying that "the team that gets the best player wins the trade" leaves this as a HUGE win for the Flames.

Not even close.

I am aware of that, and specifically if it was just OKC signing him, then fair enough, but if you google the signing you will see that MacT did indeed sign him albeit to a deal for Pickard to play in the minors, maybe even a two way deal of some sort.

Also should point out that Katz does not own OKC Barons as they are owned by a local group who work under the name of Prodigal Hockey. Katz does indeed own the OilKings through his Rexall Sports banner though and naturally that is a completely different kettle of fish to the NHL Oil and have no official affiliation as far as I am aware.
