WILL HALL OR EBERLE MAKE OLYMPIC TEAM?

Jason Gregor
July 22 2013 01:39PM

Hockey Canada announced the invitees to their Olympic orientation summer camp today. Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle were on that list, but will they make the final roster on December 31st?

I had an article ready to post about who I thought would be on the list, but before I could Hockey Canada sent out the official list.

Here is who I thought they would invite, and the names in bold are who I think will make the team, followed by the actual roster.

GOALIES:

Roberto Luongo, Carey Price, Corey Crawford, Mike Smith and Cam Ward. John Shannon reported that Braden Holtby was the 5th and not Cam Ward.

D-MEN:

Shea Weber-Drew Doughty

Duncan Keith-Brent Seabrook

P.K Subban- Alex Pietrangelo

Kris Letang-Marc Staal

Jay Bouwmeester- Bryan Campbell

Mike Green- Tyler Myers

Dion Phaneuf-Francois Beauchemin

Dan Hamhuis-Marc Methot

Hockey Canada likes to extend invites to veterans who have played well in the past, so Dan Boyle could get an invite. I think the top four pairings are the favourites to make the team, but if any of those guys get hurt of struggle in the first half of the season, one of the bottom eight guys could easily take their spot.

FORWARDS:

Eric Staal-Sidney Crosby-Steven Stamkos

Rick Nash-Jonathan Toews- Claude Giroux

John Tavares-Ryan Getzlaf-Corey Perry

Logan Couture-Patrice Bergeron-Milan Lucic

Taylor Hall-Jordan Staal-Andrew Ladd

James Neal-Patrick Sharp-Jordan Eberle

Chris Kunitz-Matt Duchene-Brad Marchand

Jamie Benn-Mike Richards-Marty St.Louis

Joe Thornton

Some forwards like Patrick Marleau and Jarome Iginla could get an invite based on past contributions, but I don't see them having a realistic shot to make the team.

Mike Babcock and his coaching staff will have some extremely difficult decisions amongst the forwards. You will notice I only picked 12 forwards, because I believe Hall, Eberle, Jordan Stall, James Neal, Andrew Ladd and Patrick Sharp and all have a great shot of making the team.

If I had to pick one of them, I believe the coaches might lean towards Ladd due to age, size and his ability to kill penalties.

Here is the actual list of who was invited

GOALIES

Roberto Luongo, Carey Price, Corey Crawford, Mike Smith and Braden Holtby.

Shannon was correct that Holtby got the nod over Cam Ward, and Luongo is the only goalie who was invited to the 2010 camp.

D-MEN

Shea Weber-Drew Doughty

Duncan Keith-Brent Seabrook

P.K Subban- Alex Pietrangelo

Kris Letang-Marc Staal

Jay Bouwmeester- Dan Boyle

Mike Green- Karl Alzner

Dan Hamhuis-Marc Methot

Dion Phaneuf-Travis Hamonic

Marc-Edouard Vlasic

No major surprises here, although it is interesting to note that Tyler Myers isn't on the list. I had 13 of the 17, but it is nice to see they wanted to give some younger guys a shot. Alzner, Hamonic and Vlasic are all solid, but I suspect the seven D-men who make the roster will come from the top-four pairings above.

FORWARDS:

Eric Staal-Sidney Crosby-Steven Stamkos

Rick Nash-Jonathan Toews- Claude Giroux

John Tavares-Ryan Getzlaf-Corey Perry

Logan Couture-Patrice Bergeron-Milan Lucic

Taylor Hall-Jordan Staal-Andrew Ladd

James Neal-Patrick Sharp-Jordan Eberle

Chris Kunitz-Matt Duchene-Brad Marchand

Jeff Carter-Mike Richards-Marty St.Louis

Joe Thornton

I got 24 of 25, but I had Jamie Benn making the camp and not Jeff Carter. I'd love to be a fly on the wall when they get down to deciding on the 13 forwards.

If Hall continues to perform like he did last season, and Dallas Eakins asks him to be more defensively aware he'll have a great chance of making the final roster. His speed on the big ice would be a huge bonus for Canada.

Lindy Ruff liked Eberle at the World Championships, and if Eakins uses Eberle on the PK this year, that will increase Eberle's chances of making the team. He'll have to produce like he did in 2011/2012 to get serious consideration.

I believe this crop of forwards has more depth than the 2010 team, and that will should make for some great debates when people submit their final 23 players.

PARTING SHOTS...

  • Here is the list of the 46 players who were invited to the summer camp for the 2010 Olympics. Steve Mason was one of five goalies invited. It's crazy how quickly things can change.

  • One more note regarding arbitration. Even though Gagner and the Oilers didn't go through the arbitration process, Gagner still got to see what the Oilers think about him. The player and the team are required to submit their case to the other side 48 hours before arbitration. The notion that teams and players avoid arbitration because they don't want to rip the player, isn't completely accurate, because in the case of Gagner, the past two summers he reached a deal only hours before his case, thus he was able to see how the Oilers valued him.

  • Based on current lineups, if the Oilers are still trying to move Ales Hemsky, Ottawa seems like the decent fit. They need another top-six forward and they have enough cap space to absorb Hemsky's $5 million cap hit. This is just me speculating. New Jersey might be a fit, but they just signed Jaromir Jagr, but the best fit based on need is Nashville. The Preds desperately need a skilled forward.

Nash has scored 30 goals five times and 40 two times.

He also scored 21 goals in 44 games last year which equates to 39 over a full season.

What exactly is overrated about that?

They will pick a team suitable for Canadian ice and lose.

They just don't get it that Getzlaf ,Perry and their ilk are just to slow for international ice.

Meanwhile Hall will sit at home when he is built for the Olympic game.

Hall = maybe (though it will be a murderers row of forwards)

Eberle = nice to have been invited. Zero chance.

Though honestly, these statements are made with me still trying to wrap my head around Jim Matheson, who is like a god to me, actually thinking Justin Schultz had a chance to be invited.

and he keeps tweeting about it.

Might be time for him to join Rod on the back 9 in Scottsdale.

My real hope though is that all three Staal brothers make it.

That would up the cool factor to such a point that we might not have to think too hard about the goalies. Ugh.

I would imagine Toews, Thornton, Getzlaf, Carter, Duchene and Couture will be shifted to wing.

Pretty tough company

Toews will not be shifted to the wing. Thornton, carter, and getzlaf better not be on this team as they have no where near the skating ability of hall or duchene. I have all the time in the world for couture on the team.

If guys like lucic, iginla, Thornton, Getz, and carter make the team we will not be medalling. 2006 all over.

Who plays with Crosby and which C's move to the W will determine the final picks. Toews, Crosby and Stamkos could be Canada's 1-2-3 C or the first line.

I'd give Hall an edge in making the final cut given how many lists have Stamkos and Giroux playing RW. With their success at the World Championships though I'd roll Crosby-Stamkos 1-2 with Giroux setting up Stamkos instead of St. Louis. I won't be surprised if Getzlaf-Perry, Stamkos-St.Louis get taken as pairs though.

So many combinations.

How is Joel Quinnville not part of the coaching staff? He's won 2 Cups in the last 5 years and more deserving than Ruff or Hitchcock. By keeping basically the same coaches from the gold medal team of 2010, I worry it will be a repeat of Torino.

@DSF

Let's see Taylor Hall outscored Rick Nash, Corey Perry, Claude Giroux, Brad Marchand, Patrick Sharp and James Neal; some of them by a WIDE margin.

Who did he not outscore?

The 38 year old Hockey Robot that is Martin St. Loius....

The kid is a 2 time memorial cup MVP and has some pretty amazing early point production numbers in his career.

Yeah, no way he has a chance to crack that roster.

Ward has been horrendous the past couple of seasons... well actually he has only posted 1 season with a better than .920 sv%.... this doesn't seem like much of a shocker

Does a player have to be on this list to have a shot at making the team later in the year? Goalies for example if a different goalie is on a tear and couple of these guys end up hurt/playing poor does an uninvited goalie get a shot?

If Hall doesn't make the team it better be because he's injured or suffered some kind of historic performance collapse.

Eberle is a real long shot.

Not inviting Benn is crazy.

--------

Aren't OTT and NASH two teams with an internal cap?

Also, with the MacArthur and Ryan signings do you think they are still going to tinker with the top lines?

That Hemsky for Smith deal (with whatever massaging needed) might be a fit still if OTT is looking to spend more and add some firepower.

No way he is, Halls speed is going to be a huge asset on the big ice. If it's one of the two, it's Hall. I'd like to see both as a third line though. Chemistry is hard to ignore in a compressed tournament.

Clutch in international tournaments when he was 19 playing against people his age or younger.

Now that he is the younger one with less experience and playing at a elite level it is less likely he will be clutch.

If he does make the team I don't think he will be put in a chance to be clutch. I see too many players ahead of him one the ice if the game is on the line.

nothing to do with dual citizenship. The rule is you have to declare your team, once you do and you have played in iihf hockey you can not switch teams until an absence of at least 4 years. (might be 3 years).

When was the last time Myers played for Canada. Dont think he is eligible for the US team.

Ya, either of the two will be given lesser roles on the bottom 6 just like the World Tournament during the summer.

Would be interesting to see how they preform on the top lines with players who would make them better, like Crosby, Stamkos, and Giroux.

Edit: Eberle was KIND OF clutch in the tournament in the summer during the shootout against Sweden. He was the only one able to score.

I'm pretty sure he's not on this list because he's terrible. He's inconsistent. He can't even stay out of the pressbox on a bad Sabres team. I have no idea why Gregor finds it "interesting" that he wasn't invited. Even if it were for future-grooming purposes, a guy like J.Schultz would make more sense than Myers.

•Based on current lineups, if the Oilers are still trying to move Ales Hemsky, Ottawa seems like the decent fit. They need another top-six forward and they have enough cap space to absorb Hemsky's $5 million cap hit. This is just me speculating.

Nope. OTT has a self imposed $50 million spending cap. They are already at $53.8 M for cap purposes and $51.7 M in real dollars. And they have still have to sign RFA Jared Cowan.

Taking on Hemsky for someone like Zack Smith would boost payroll by another $3.2 M.

Cheepo Melnyk won't go for that.

I believe Brian Murray also mentioned their "internal cap" during his explaination of why they didn't re-sign Alfie. I would love it if somehow MacT could give Ottawa Hemsky and get Zack Smith back in return. The Oil could eat some of the salary to help offset the added cap hit going Ottawa's way.....say 25%? Does that get it done or at least get them in the ballpark?

I didn't realize their internal cap was so low. If that is the case, my Smith for Hemsky thought was just blown to pieces...oh well.

I think Hall has the best shot to make this team simply because in terms of LW, you have Lucic, Nash, and Hall as probably the top three Canadian LW.

It is crazy to think you could make an entire forward group out of centres and it would be pretty decent looking.

For centres there are: Crosby, Stamkos, Giroux, Getzlaf, Thorton, Bergeron, Tavares, Stall, Stall, Couture, Toews, Richards, Duchene, and Sharp. I still could be missing some big names off that.

I would love to see a Stamkos Hall Stall line.

Regardless, team Canada is pretty stacked. I think it will be another gold for us assuming our goalies can get it done.

I like Hall's chances to make the Olympic squad right now based on his just ended season and his skating power/speed as well...but I also find and see that Ebs could make the squad as an extra because he is clutch and he has done it both for the world juniors (has set records too) and for the Oilers in several games the past two yrs..

I see them as top flight players for the following Olympics in 2018 for sure though I do hope they make it this yr. Anyways, this is just a camp and the half season can also change minds as well, especially for the goalies invited to the squad.

With the oilers talk here, i think the Oilers downsize with two trade deals each involving one of Hemsky and N. Schultz....maybe Smid (unfortunately here). I am seeing with open mind of MacT bringing down the cap space ceiling from the now $1.3 mil left to hopefully $7 to $10 mil...and yet then still bring in Steckel (UFA)or Zack Smith (Ott trade possibility) for 4th line centre duty.

The Oilers could just sign Steckel for the 4th line C role.

He made $1.1 M last year for ANA. He must be getting a little nervous the music is going to stop and he won't have a chair.

On the other hand, he had just 7 pts and 4 PIM's in 34 games last year. 2 minor penalties doesn't exactly scream "gritty".

True. I thought of Steckel, but he would only be a short term answer. The main reason I mention Smith is his cap hit (1.8875MM), length of term left of his deal (4 years) and age/size 25yrs/6'2" 212lbs. I doubt Ottawa gives him up that easy, but IMO he would be an ideal addition to bolster the Oil at centre.

As I already spoke prior on Hall and Ebs for the present type Olympic squad, I have to say J. Schultz won't be looked at this time around...but 2018 will be a definite invite for him.

With of the Oilers, I see Hemsky being traded now more likely and easily (suggestive words only folks-IMO) for say draft picks (2nd round????Hmmmm)...unless Ottawa comes in to trade Zack Smith somehow. At this point if he is traded, (with a healthy $6.3 mil capspace...) I then see MacT next making a hard play for Clifford out of LA...(possible offer sheet????...Hmmmmm).

Then I am seeing N. Schultz traded which loosens up another $3.5 either in capspace or for a bottom six forward coming back...

Steckel is good too if Smith from Ott is not traded for...

Just wondering and thinking here BTW...hmmmm

Then I am seeing N. Schultz traded which loosens up another $3.5 either in capspace or for a bottom six forward coming back...

Steckel is good too if Smith from Ott is not traded for...

Just wondering and thinking here BTW...hmmmm

I think Clifford would be a nice addition of size/grit but I doubt we see an offer sheet though. Tambo ticked Lombardi off with the Fraser fiasco, so I don't think MacT ruffles any feathers in LA. With that said, LA is a division opponent now, so maybe they will have to go the offer sheet route.....who knows?

I agree on the N.Schultz comment. The Oil have 9 NHL D-Men on the roster, maybe 10 if Klefbom is ready, so someone has to go don't you think? Schultz is the prime trade candidate based on his price tag and contact expiring at season end IMO.

I hope neither get picked. There enough good players available and they won't run out of gas in April.

@Pouzar...

Your statement on neither Ebs and/or Hall making the Oly squad this year is a good Oiler fan selfish wish...but...I loved it when Eberle scored those clutch gooals for canada ant the WCJ tourneys and WOw!!!...would it not be so awesome to see both of them make the team and...then we see Hall passes to Ebs with only 4.5 seconds left to win the Gold?????

WhattaScene that would be at the highest level!!!!
