Introducing the TLN Top 20 Leafs Prospects: Midterm Rankings

The Toronto Maple Leafs have played 50 games this season, which is a little more than half the schedule, which makes it still kind of appropriate for The Leafs Nation to release our TLN Top 20 Leafs Prospect Midterm Rankings.

We polled our writers - Cam, Steve, Jeff, Jim, John, Ryan, and yours truly - for their top prospects, threw them into a spreadsheet, worked some mathematical magic, and here we are… the twenty best prospects in the organization, several honourable mentions, and a handful of players who didn’t receive a single vote. Aww :’(

Of course, we’re not going to drop all this knowledge on you at once. Oh, no. You can’t handle this hotness.

Check back tomorrow for a review of the seasons-so-far of our Honourable Mentions group. On Tuesday, we’ll cover #20 through # 16, Wednesday will be #15 through #11, Thursday we’ll tackle #10 through #6, and Friday we got #5 down to #1.

Below you’ll find all players eligible for the vote - guys that the TLN staff as a group felt were still considered prospects, based on a variety of factors (age, pro experience, etc.). Feel free to come up with your own list, drop it in the comments, keep a copy kicking around, and compare with our final list.

Andreas Johnson Connor Brown Jamie Devane Petter Granberg
Andrew Crescenzi David Broll Jerry D'Amigo Ryan Rupert
Andrew MacWilliam Dominic Toninato Josh Leivo Sam Carrick
Antoine Bibeau Eric Knodel Kenny Ryan Stuart Percy
Brad Ross Fabrice Herzog Matt Finn Tom Nilsson
Carter Ashton Frederik Gauthier Max Everson Tony Cameranesi
Carter Verhaeghe Garret Sparks Morgan Rielly Tyler Biggs
Christopher Gibson Greg McKegg Peter Holland Viktor Loov
I’m not going to give you any clues as to who ranked where, but I will tell you that…

  • Four players who weren’t ranked in the preseason list have now cracked our Top 20.
  • One player jumped a whole nine spots… Can you guess who that is?
  • Only two players on the entire list didn’t move from their original rankings.

P.S. You can find our preseason rankings here.

"One player jumped a whole nine spots… Can you guess who that is?"

Andrew MacWilliam from 19 to 10? Carter Ashton from 11 to 2...close but maybe not. Connor Brown from 18 to 9 seems quite possible, 92 points in 45 games.

"Four players who weren’t ranked in the preseason list have now cracked our Top 20."

Jamie Devane, Kenny Ryan, Fabrice Herzog and Sam Carrick?

Carrick has come out of no where to be one of the nicest surprises on the Marlies. At just 21 he had another game winning goal in the AHL the other night. In 35 games this year has 16 points, plus 10 and 60 PIMs. He's looking like he will become a very useful 4th line center in like Boston's Gregory Campbell, mean but slightly larger with better offense and defense.

Rielly was #1 to start, so he couldn't have moved up

I like how you guys update this much more regularly then the PPP site. It is good for us fans to get a view of how the leaf fans are progressing because all I ever hear is that Brown will be a bust, being he plays with mckinnon.

Holland is one of the players who is new to the list, going to have to guess that Rielly is one of the players not to move a spot. Carrick, Devane, and Ryan are 3 players i can think if cracking the mid term rankings
