Playoffs? This team?
Yes, this team. They’re in the position right now and some people don’t seem to believe it or even understand how. The Leafs are not as bad as most people make them out to be after every loss and is better than last year’s version.
In the summer I developed a pretty simple algorithm for playoff success that combines possession, special teams and goals (methodology here) which I talked about in a post that looked at why the Leafs are nowhere close to contending for the Cup.
Basically, they’ve been really bad in the past, but we already knew that right? This year is their best mark ever, and there’s reason to believe they can continue at that level of play.

The Leafs play the Penguins tonight (pictured above) and I spent an alarming amount of time looking for the right penguin photo to start this off. What can I say, penguins are cute as hell and you can get lost in the internet easily if you're looking at penguins, which is actually an analogy for tonight's game.
The Penguins are, in my opinion at least, the best team in the league, and if the Leafs get caught watching them (like they tend to do with good teams) they'll look lost on the ice. Playing Pittsburgh at home is going to be a challenge for the high-flying Leafs who have won two straight. It's also the annual father's trip, so congrats to them for getting a free trip to Pittsburgh on a Wednesday. I bet they're stoked. Hopefully the dads don't go home disappointed.

The Leafs face the Bruins tonight at home and for some reason the game starts at 8pm. You've been warned, so find something else to do between 7 and 8. Spend time with your girlfriend or your dog, maybe watch some Brooklyn Nine-Nine re-runs, I don't know.
Seriously, why is the game at 8? Who thought that was a good idea?

About 10 minutes into this game I thought it would be one of those nights for the boys in blue. The Leafs were completely out-chanced and out-played in every zone and every facet of play. It looked like a typical Leafs period. But hockey's a funny game. Things change quickly.

The Leafs lost last night, bad. Jerseys were tossed in disgust. It was just ugly. I happened to be there last night, and the crowd was either completely dead or not even remotely pleased with what was happening on the ice. The Leafs were just completely out-classed by a much better Penguins team who ran roughshod over a Leafs system that looks exactly the same as it did last year. In short, the Leafs are just a mess right now, but I'm not sure why people are surprised. This is what the team looks like when you take out-of-this-world goaltending out of the equation. Placed side by side against a contender, it's clear that the Leafs just aren't good enough right now.
The good news is that today's a new day and a new game. The bad news is that it's against another good team playing in their home opener, the Rangers.
