After what seemed like an eternity (it was only a bye week), the Leafs are back in action tonight against the Ottawa Senators in their second game of a back-to-back.  The game hasn't even started yet and the drama has already begun; Garret Sparks was recalled by the Leafs this morning, as confirmed by the club around 10:45am EST.

Auston Matthews makes his return to Ottawa tonight, 3 months after scoring 4 goals in his NHL debut. Coming off a big win last night, this game is could be a crucial one down the line for the Leafs.  They are only 2 points behind the Senators in the standings, each team with 40 GP.

Tournament in Review: How did Leafs prospects fare at the World Juniors?

Well, folks, it's over. The 2017 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship came to a close last night after the USA beat Canada in the shootout to claim the tournament's top spot. 2 Leafs prospects were awarded gold medals in Jeremy Bracco and Joseph Woll.  Carl Grundstrom and Team Sweden had a disappointing 4th place finish after a 2-1 loss to Russia in the bronze medal game, and Team Latvia, along with Martins Dzierkals, finished in 10th place.

I've been pleasantly surprised by the Leafs prospects at this year's World Juniors. From Carl Grundstom's 5 game point streak to open the tournament, to Joseph Woll's incredible performance against Canada in the NYE classic game, to Jeremy Bracco's crazy offensive abilities, there has certainly been no lack of entertainment over the past 10 days. Though there have also been a few disappointments, the Leafs future seems secure in the hands of their up-and-coming prospects.

Day 9 brought 2 fantastic matchups against 4 of the WJHC's powerhouse teams, and it wasn't surprising that these games produced some of the best hockey the tournament has seen so far.  The USA was victorious over Russia, and the decision was left to the 8th round of dreaded shootout; Troy Terry scored 3 consecutive goals for the Americans to lead his team to the win.

After giving up 2 quick goals in the first period, Canada made a goaltending switch that was followed by instant success.  Sweden eventually lost the game by a score of 5-2, as the semifinal matchup marked the end of Sweden's undefeated streak through 5 games at the 2017 WJC.

Jeremy Bracco came up big for the Americans today, tallying an assist and scoring a shootout goal in the 5th round that ultimately kept the USA alive in the game.  Carl Grundstrom scored early in the first for Sweden, but had a fairly quiet game after.  Both players will need to come up big tomorrow, as each of their respective teams will be trying to capture a medal.

So... Latvia lost.  It's officially over. Finland was victorious against the Latvians in the second relegation game this evening, defeating Latvia 4-1 and staying alive in the WJC's top division.  It was an unfortunate ending to a hard fought tournament for Latvia, as the team will return to Division I Group A for the 2018 World Juniors.

Day 7 was a very exciting day for Leafs prospects, as Jeremy Bracco, Carl Grundstrom and Martins Dzierkals took to the ice in crucial games for their teams.  Sweden and the USA were victorious in their quarterfinal matchups, and both Jeremy Bracco and Carl Grundstrom tallied points in their respective games.  Martins Dzierkals and the Latvians did not have a fantastic day yesterday, losing by a score of 2-1 to Finland in the first game of the relegation round.
