Montreal's Excellent Power Play

October 06 2011 11:20PM

Last night on the CBC we got to hear about Montreal's excellent system based play at great length thanks to insightful hockey savant Glenn Healy. I figured I'd do a frame by frame breakdown of the only Montreal power play a goal was scored on in order to demonstrate why the Canadiens are so effective on special teams.

Leafs Make More Cuts, Komisarek Survives

September 25 2011 11:24AM

The Leafs have trimmed their preseason roster again, sending Luca Caputi, Joe Colborne, Ryan Hamilton, Marcel Mueller, Kenny Ryan, Greg Scott, Mike Zigomanis, Jesse Blacker, Jeff Finger, Simon Gysbers, Korbinian Holzer, Juraj Mikus and Mark Owuya to the Marlies per James Mirtle.

Most of those guys barely played, but aside from just spreading the news far and wide there's some interesting thoughts here. Caputi has to clear waivers and I wonder if he's a young enough recognizable name to get snagged.

Joe Colborne had a decent training camp but sending him down is likely the right move. Hopefully he can have a big season in the AHL as he continues to make his case for a spot with the Leafs. Given that Tim Connolly is the Leafs first line center there's a good chance Colborne will see duty between Lupul and Kessel when Connolly is hurt.

Sabres 2 Leafs 1: Strong Showing

September 23 2011 08:01PM

The Leafs lost 2-1 tonight but I think that we saw some great performances up and down the Leafs lineup. The Sabres got on the board first when Dion Phaneuf passed into Keith Aulie's skates and Corey Tropp buried the resulting turnover. John Michael Liles had a beautiful rush which led to Phil Kessel muscling a defender off and banging in the rebound to tie the game in the second before a Kaleta dive gave the Sabres a power play. Phaneuf blocked a shot and his stick broke and that was all she wrote. Follow me over the jump for some thoughts on the game.

Leafs Head to Philly

September 21 2011 10:14AM

I hear last night's game against Philly was fantastic and a great time was had by all. I didn't watch the game because it was the preseason. However I know some of you like to watch preseason hockey even if personally it serves only to enrage me when things go poorly so here's a preview.
