Florida Panthers Win the Draft Lottery, Leafs to Pick Eighth Overall

As expected, the Toronto Maple Leafs will pick 8th in the upcoming 2014 NHL Entry Draft, set to take place on June 27th and 28th in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Florida Panthers will pick first overall, winning the lottery with an 18.8%. Sorry Buffalo.

Picking 8th, it's pretty certain that the Leafs won't have a shot the likes of Kootenay's Sam Reinhart, Kingston's Sam Bennett, or Barrie's Aaron Ekblad. Realistically, they're probably too far back to get one of Oshawa's Michael Dal Colle or Prince Albert's Leon Draisaitl as well.

That being said, this isn't a half-bad draft. While there isn't a Nathan MacKinnon, John Tavares, or Steven Stamkos available this time around, there's about a half-a-round of solid prospects. The Leafs should be able to draft one of them, assuming they don't go off the board.

Well, it looks like it’s a done deal. After several days of rampant speculation, it looks like Brendan Shanahan is set to take over as President of the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey club. From Damien Cox over at the Toronto Star:

"Shanahan, according to multiple sources, will resign his position as the NHL’s director of player safety as early as Friday and immediately join the Leafs this weekend as the team closes out a disappointing season.

While his precise job could not be confirmed, sources suggest the Hall of Fame winger will likely be named president of the Leafs hockey club, not only president of hockey operations.
A formal press conference to announce his hiring could happen as early as Monday in Leiweke’s latest eye-popping maneuver."

In what was most likely their last chance to keep pace with the Eastern Conference’s other playoff hopefuls, the Toronto Maple Leafs played a pretty damn poor game on Saturday night, losing 4-2 to the Detroit Red Wings.

According to Sports Club Stats, the Leafs now have a 6.5% chance of making the postseason. That even seems a little generous.

Carter Verhaeghe (Niagara, OHL)

All in all, it's been a great season for Carter Verhaeghe. Although he couldn't keep up with the near two-points-per-game pace he set for himself early in the year, Verhaeghe still finished the OHL regular season with 28 goals and 82 points in 65 games - good for 21st in league scoring. Those are some pretty solid numbers for a 3rd round pick in his Draft +1 year.

With the regular season completed, Verhaeghe will move on to a much greater challenge. His Niagara IceDogs currently hold down the 7th seed in the Eastern Conference Quarter Finals, and will begin their series with North Bay on Friday. First off, wow, that's a long bus ride. Second, the Battalion's stingy defense allowed only 189 goals against all season, 3rd lowest in the league. Verhaeghe might need that early season scoring touch if Niagara hopes to make a series of it.
