Leafs, Franson Avoid Arbitration, Agree to One-Year Contract

The Toronto Maple Leafs have avoided today's salary arbitration hearing with defenceman Cody Franson by signing him to a one-year, $3.3M contract, because apparently everyone had tee times.

Franson was the Leafs' highest scoring defender last season, with five goals and 33 points in 79 games.

It's been a pretty big day for Rinat Valiev, the Leafs' 2014 3rd round pick. First, he learned how to cook nutritious meals as part of Toronto's prospect development camp. Then, he signed a three-year entry level contract.

It appears that Dave Morrison, the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Director of Amateur Scouting, has pleasantly surprised a good number of his critics.

With each of their six picks in the 2014 NHL draft, the Toronto Maple Leafs selected players known more for their point production potential as opposed to their size, grit, and defensive acumen. 

While a few of the newest Leafs certainly possess size and strength, each one of them has a developing offensive game that the organization’s prospect pool certainly lacked. With all due respect to Connor Brown, Andreas Johnson, and Carter Verhaeghe, offensive skill was an area that the Leafs sorely needed to improve upon.

Leafs Select Pierre Engvall in 7th Round

With their last pick in the draft, the Leafs selected Swedish winger Pierre Engvall out of Frolunda's J20 SuperElit team. At 6'4, 190lbs, Toronto waited until the 7th round, 188th overall to draft size - and they'll be getting some skill to go along with it.

Leafs Stocking Up on American Forwards, Take Nolan Vesey in 6th Round

Apparently, Dave Morrison was a big fan of American junior league players this year. 

To go along with USHL picks J.J. Piccinich and Dakota Joshua, the Leafs selected 6'0, 190lb left winger Nolan Vesey with their 6th round pick, 158th overall.
