SOCHI UPDATE: Praise Be To The Phil

We skipped over yesterday's USA-Russia game, for two reasons. One, I overslept and missed it. Two, everybody was screaming T.J. Oshie's name and trying to talk about the Leafs players would have just been like trying to yell for undivided attention in a downtown Tokyo intersection.

Marlies Win Over Farjestad

Today, the Toronto Marlies took an idea from their Exhibition Place neighbours, Toronto FC. Like the MLS, the AHL went for the "one all star team against a well known European club" approach to their good-play-rewarding festivities, and like TFC did with Serie A squad AS Roma this summer, the Marlies told the SHL's Farjestads BK that they wanted a crack at them too. It made plenty of sense, after all; Farjestads gets a bit of media attention, and had to stop in Toronto to fly back home anyway, so why not have a game before hand?

Many were hoping for this game to be an indicator of the quality of the two leagues. To an extent, we got to see some of the skill both sides provided, but it looked like both teams wanted to stay fresh and avoid injury. Combine this with the fact that Toronto rested several key players (they play 'real' games tomorrow and Monday), and it made this game really feel like the exhibition that it was. It was still a fun afternoon out, and one that went in favour of the home team, who skated away with 4-3 overtime victory.

In any event. If you've been anywhere near Tumblr, or have befriended people who frequent the site, you'd know that there's a special valentines day trend going around. I'm talking about the "low-budget" style jpg cards, complete with comic sans, cheesy messages, and poorly cut out photos. I figured we'd mix the Leafs into this mess, and made a few of my own. If you'd like to take a crack at it, I left you a template at the top.

Is there a better way to spend your morning than watching two hockey games at the same time? Part of me leaned towards "going back to sleep" when I first woke up, but there were Leafs to watch! All three Blue and White representatives played their first games of the tournament at a slightly irritating 7:30 AM Toronto Time.

My Olympic Hopes

The 2014 Winter Olympics are well underway in Sochi, and today integrated what's arguably it's highest profile event - Men's Ice Hockey. Dozens of players have the opportunity to pull their country's sweater over their shoulders, in pursuit of the only championship that realistically competes with the Stanley Cup. The Leafs are represented by two Americans and a Russian. This is what I'd like to see come out of the tournament...
