Marlies Win Physical School Day Game

Buses full of groups organized by their respective leaders enter the scene. Together, they fill the stands. They're loud. They cheer their team when they're up, and they boo the opposition as if they killed their loved ones. Many have signs. Even as these pockets of fans don't know each other, they all come together in unison to sign relevant pop anthems during breaks in play. It's more than just a game to them, and the atmosphere leaving Exhibition Place that afternoon, with the sun very much awake, was electric.

Sounds like the Toronto FC rebuild got off on the right foot, right? The reality is a bit less glamourous. The scene was Ricoh Coliseum, not BMO Field. The supporters section leaders you imagined are actually teachers. Katy Perry had no relevance to the game, they crowd just like singing. It's more than just a game to the masses in the stands, because they're children and they didn't have to be in class. Yes, yesterday was a school day game. Which usually means a brawl, opposition 50 save shutout, or a blowout. For once, it was neither, and the Marlies won 5-4 in a shootout.

The Toronto Marlies have an 11AM home game today. Why? Because they hate logic (actually, it's a school day game, something they do a few times a season). To some, this isn't very interesting on the surface (if it is? We'll have a recap on TheLeafsNation), but a bit of an eyebrow raiser came in the form of Craig MacTavish being in attendance.

I can't tell you exactly what he's here for, but this is what we do know.

It was only a matter of time before the Toronto Maple Leafs made a roster move to clean up the roster mess that November/December's wave of injuries created. Today, the tipping point was reached and a deal was made with the Edmonton Oilers, sending defenceman Mark Fraser to the land of Oil and misery.

Mailbag: The Re-Return

Jeff Veillette (Jeffler)
January 27 2014 09:03PM

Hey! We tried this thing during the offseason, where I answered people's questions about the Leafs and Marlies once per week. It lasted two consecutive weeks. I tried to revive it a month or so later, which lasted one week. Moral of the story? Jeffler sucks. Don't do a hockey mailbag when people aren't playing hockey. Also, Jeffler Sucks. Let's go for three weeks and beyond this time! Mondays are the goal, though it could slip into another day if gamedays or major stories get in the way.

From this point forward, if you'd like to submit a question, email me at jeffler@gmail.com, or tweet your question with the hashtag #TLNMailbag. Tagging @Jeffler would be a fun courtesy, but unneccessary, especially if you're closing in on character limits. You can also leave your question in the comments of this post. Without further ado...
