Many people who aren't from here have a tendency to describe Toronto as "Hell on Earth". This is mostly out of jealously, but with last night considered, they may have a point. I mean, the city freezes over and both the Leafs and the Raptors dominate their high-flying opponents from Chicago? Even I'm a little skeptical...

Last night was arguably the best Leafs game of the season, and while getting those results against a powerhouse is a bit unexpected, there was nothing flukey about how they got this win.

How Bad Is The Bleeding?

Dion Phaneuf's two game suspension has only added gasoline to a raging fire. That fire, of course, is the debate over just how bad the Leafs shot woes are. As we've all heard about a thousand times, Toronto is close to taking the fewest shots per game in the league, give up the most by a good chunk, and have one of the worst differentials in recorded NHL history. To say that November was a rough month would be an understatement. The "bounces" that were going the Leafs' way for most of the calendar year began to dry up, every offensive centre in the lineup found a way to disappear in some way shape or form, and the Leafs squeaked away with just two regulation wins and eleven points in thirteen games. To remain a playoff team, the Leafs absolutely need to have a strong December. The issue? Their opponents are strong, including tonight's San Jose Sharks. It was a battle of the best volume shooters against one of the worst shot bleeders, and at times it showed, ultimately leading to a 4-2 win for the Sharks.

Hey, so I know everybody wants to pretend last night's Leafs game never happened. Maybe if your first reaction was to reach for alcohol, your memory may have just accomplished that (if so, congrats and seek help). But, before the big club began their loss in Montreal last night, the Toronto Marlies had an afternoon game against the Rochester Americans. The process? A little Leafs-like, but the result was different, as they won 3-2 over the Buffalo Sabres affiliate.
