We're getting conflicting reports from Sportsnet and TSN, but nonetheless, there's a lot of talk around the Toronto Maple Leafs' Dion Phaneuf.
Not long ago, Sportsnet's John Shannon reported that the Detroit Red Wings have no interest in Dion Phaneuf at this time, throwing a whole bunch of cold water on TSN's Darren Dreger's earlier reports that Detroit and two other teams had talked to the Leafs about their captain.
Wishful thinking from maple Leafs fans that Dion Phaneuf was going out of town. If the thought was that he's going to Detroit, he's not going to Detroit. There is at this point no way that Dion Phaneuf is going to be a Detroit Red Wing. It certainly looks like that right now.
Now, Dreger is back with an update, and he's not ready to concede. Apparently, Dion-to-Detroit is still very much a possibility. More after the jump!

The Toronto Maple Leafs will look to bounce back from an embarrassing 4-0 loss to the Montreal Canadiens last night when they meet up with the Washington Capitals this evening. On the other hand, Toronto Maple Leafs fans will look for their favourite team to continue their losing ways, as they are so, so, so near the bottom of the standings, and looking ever more likely to secure a top-5 draft pick.

Could Toronto's scorched earth approach to the upcoming NHL trade deadline include a Jonathan Bernier trade?
On Saturday night Sportsnet's Damien Cox suggested as much on the always-interesting Hockey Night in Canada Saturday Headlines segment:
"There's lots and lots to talk about with the Toronto Maple Leafs. As we expected, they could be the most active team in the National Hockey League. What's interesting is now they appear to be listening to offers for goaltender Jonathan Bernier... Now they're listening, so what that means we'll wait and see, but there are teams out there in the National Hockey league who might be interested in upgrading their goaltender. The San Jose Sharks have been talked about all season long. Dallas Stars, maybe, although they already went out and got Jhonas Enroth."
That's as interesting as it is perplexing. It also isn't the first time Cox has mentioned the possibility of Bernier being on the move, so this isn't necessarily coming out of left field.

Are you happy with the deals so far?
Justin Fisher: I think the Leafs have done an excellent job so far leading up to the deadline, and that was before they miraculously managed to unload David Clarkson. I have nothing against the guy, but it's obvious he wasn't playing well here and that his contract was an unbelievably painful burden to a cap team like Toronto. They Leafs have added a first, second and fourth round pick as well as prospect Brendan Leipsic for three pending free agents. You can't really do much better than that.
Jon Steitzer: I am as happy as I can be by Leafs trades in the middle of a tear down. Clarkson is gone. The biggest mistake has been corrected, this is a beautiful thing. The Sekera return was much nicer than what Franson/Santorelli returned, but I'm still happy. As much as I'd love for the pick in the Winnik deal to be a 2015 2nd, I like next year's draft too. If I have a complaint it's that the Leafs retained salary on Winnik meaning they can only do one more salary retention deal this season.

Welcome to the Zach Sill era, Toronto.
It will be defined by a lot of losses (no more than 22), a couple points, and a lot of penalty minutes.
It's a good time to be alive.
