Should the Leafs trade Bozak, Frattin, Gardiner and a 1st for Luongo?

Well, here we go. Roberto Luongo trade speculation has heated up again this week. I wrote a sarcastic post about James Reimer at UBC on Wednesday, but apparently this got people to actually start talking Luongo trade.

Damien Cox, who fills a role analogous to the middle segment of the human centipede, was able to "speculate" this morning enough to drop a fun tidbit: the Vancouver Canucks wanted Tyler Bozak, Matt Frattin, Jake Gardiner and a first round pick for Luongo at the draft.

Well, it's not really "speculation" when you come right out and say it:

At the draft, reports indicated Vancouver asked for centre Tyler Bozak, defenceman Jake Gardiner, a first round pick and winger Matt Frattin in exchange for the 33-year-old Luongo. The Leafs had no interest in paying that kind of price, largely because there is no significant market for the services of the veteran goaltender.

The Trouble with Tyler Biggs

Today, the Toronto Maple Leafs were due to play in Washington. This upsets me for two reasons, one, that there's still no NHL hockey on TV, and two is that I'm very interesting to see what comes out of the Capitals' pseudo-rebuild. They went decidedly defensive last season despite holding the most exciting offensive talent in a decade, and it looks like their intention in the offseason was to ditch that.

Though they got rid of Alex Semin, they added Mike Ribeiro and Wojtek Wolski. The second is a bit of an enigma, an up-and-down player with decent possession numbers throughout his career though has played several different roles for each of the four teams he's played for. Ribeiro, however, is a talented, natural centre and though his numbers have declined, I think he should get an added boost this season.

Maybe there will be a season. There probably will be, and Washington is always an interesting team to track. But there won't be a game tonight. No, so today we will talk about Tyler Biggs.

Is there a trade imminent???

Although Brad Ziemer and Ben Kuzma are two totally different people, they have similar sounding names and thus easy to mix up. However, they work for competing news outlets and both have independently reported that James Reimer is practicing with the Vancouver Canucks at UBC.

What does it all mean?

I don't want to be "that guy" who harps on every baseball opinion thrown out by a member of the mainstream press, but sometimes they're just too dumb to pass up.

This is Steve Simmons, a guy who works for the Toronto Sun and TSN. He is a full-time sportswriter. He makes well more than I do, yet he talks about sports like that asshole at your work talks about sports: He judges who is good and who is bad based on who the commentators talk about the most.

Here's what he wrote:

Marlies, Americans, play with two pucks

Tonight was the designated start of the National Hockey League season. But it wasn't the start. The Toronto Maple Leafs are off all over the world, right now. This was the Toronto Marlies. They played against the Rochester Americans a few steps down the road from the Leafs rink, at a smaller barn called Ricoh Coliseum.

They played very well, too, the Marlies. They won the opener and there were some players that made us very confident that the team's stars—Jake Gardiner and Nazem Kadri—could one day become Toronto Maple Leafs.  The home team won, and had a few players in the lineup who looked like legitimate NHLers. Maybe it was more like a Toronto home opener than originally expected.
