Decertification is certifiable

The momentum is growing. Every day the calls to decertify or otherwise disband the NHLPA are growing. And I don't mean from NHL players.

No, hockey fans and media alike are now so fed up with what passes for collective bargaining in the NHL that they want to blow up the entire system. We're not talking just decertifying for the purposes of forcing the NHL to actually make a deal under threat of anti-trust lawsuits, i.e. what the NHL is alleging and what the NHLPA surely intends to do.

No, there are now calls to permanently abolish the NHLPA and in so doing completely free up all restrictions to player movement, including the NHL draft.

Personally, I'm not so sure this is a great idea...

NHL CBA is a flop

It took a long time, but it looks like we're now at the final table in this high stakes game of poker that is the NHL CBA negotations.

And yes, this this is and always has been a heads up game. Neither you, nor I, nor any of the tens of thousands tens of hundreds tens out there that organized or took part in sit-ins, petitions or protests have a seat at this table, despite the fact that both sides are playing with our money.

Although, is this really any different that the real world? I mean, this pretty much describes our government institutions, and even more so the professional gamblers on the investment banking circuit that nearly blew up the house of cards that is our global financial system.

But I digress. Let's have a look at where we are heading into this final round...

It's the thought that counts

Aw, you shouldn't have.

No, really. I mean it. You shouldn't have.

If you take yourself at all seriously about being a "journalist," sports or otherwise, you shouldn't have been in such a rush to "break" a story that you neglected to put some thought into it. THAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT PART!

Whether you're a hockey analyst or just picking out a gift, it's the thought that counts.

And with both Christmas and the endgame in the NHL lockout both just around the corner, maybe a review of this idea is in order...

The NHL Could Learn Something From The U.S. Elections

Chances of seeing the Stanley Cup

Today marks the end of the gruelling campaign for the presidency of the United States. However, unlike an NHL season (remember those?), the winner of this campaign will actually have a very good chance of seeing the Stanley Cup. Multiple times, even.

If only it was that easy for the Presidents' Trophy winner. Sigh.

But I guess winning the Presidents' Trophy is very prestigious just in and of itself. I mean, you not only get the Trophy and a guarantee of two, maybe three home games in the playoffs, but the NHL even has a separate web page to recognize the winners...oh for God's sake.

Anyway, sharing a name for the ultimate prize (oh shut up and just go with it) is not the only thing in common between the NHL and the U.S. political system...

NHL Lockout Will End When Greed Finally Takes Over

Greed takes over

Contrary to popular belief, greed has not been the driving force behind the NHL lockout.

No. To date, it's just been business. And in business, you exploit your position to extract the maximum profits the market will bear. You do this either by squeezing out the competition so you have free reign to raise prices, or you use leverage to drive costs out of your supply chain. There is no greed involved. It's just math.

In fact, if greed has a role to play, it will be in saving the NHL hockey season. Here's why...
