IT'S DONE - MONSTER'S NO. 1

With a tip of the hat to the second-funniest film of all-time, Airplane!, I have a simple goaltending question for Leafs' fans: Who’s number one? Who's the head man, the top dog, the big cheese?

When J-S Giguère’s groin has returned to health, is he still Ron Wilson’s guy? Does he step right back into the routine of playing two out of every three games? Because that’s what he was doing before leaving a game in the third period ten days ago against Nashville. Two games Jiggy, one game Gustavsson. Two games Jiggy, one game Gustavsson. Is Giguère still the Leafs’ number one netminder?

The Toronto Maple Leafs travel down the QEW to take on the Buffalo Sabres. I'm not sure what the opposite of a happy hunting ground would be but HSBC Arena has certainly been just that for the Leafs. Since the lockout they are 5-11-2 and have only scored more than two goals once in their last six visits. But if the Leafs are going to make the playoffs these games against fellow bubble teams are the kinds of games that they need to win.

About twenty games into any NHL season, there are always aspects of any team that very few saw coming. Steven Stamkos’ torrid goal-scoring start in Tampa Bay falls into that category. So do the struggles of the New Jersey Devils. What about the Toronto Maple Leafs’ start surprises you? Is it Luke Schenn’s defensive prowess? Maybe it’s Nazem Kadri’s return from AHL exile to provide a much-needed offensive spark. Here are the three biggest Leafs’ shockers, to me, twenty games into this 2010-11 NHL season.

Here are the scoring chances that I counted from the game against the Dallas Stars.  I will be tracking scoring chances for each Leafs game and posting the results here at LeafsNation throughout the season.  You can check out my blog Under the Helmet for results from previous games this season and last season.

The Leafs outchanced the Stars 14-13 in a game that was fairly light on high quality shots.  Read on for the game log, individual data on each Leaf player, and team scoring chance data by period and game state.

BRAD RICHARDS? NO, THANKS!

Steve Lansky

There is no rumour mill like the Toronto rumour mill. We can all agree on that. And, right now, Brad-Richards-to-the-Leafs is in the hopper, ready to be ground up and spit out. On behalf of all Leafs’ fans everywhere, I’m happy to say, “No, thank you” to the prospect of Richards coming to Toronto. Not interested. Not under any circumstances. Let him ultimately skate his way into retirement elsewhere.
