Hey, the Leafs finally did it! They made a multi-asset trade to grab immediate help! That is, if you consider a slight downgrade, retained salary, and giving up a draft pick "immediate help". In a surprise move, the Toronto Maple Leafs have traded Carl Gunnarsson and a 4th round pick for Roman Polak. Toronto will also retain $200,000 in Gunnarsson's Salary.

With their 5th round pick, 128th overall, the Toronto Maple Leafs selected Dakota Joshua of the USHL's Sioux Falls Stampede. Joshua is a 6'2, 182lbs centre with some offensive skill.

With their 4th round pick the Leafs looked to the USHL, selecting right winger J.J. Piccinich of the Youngstown Phantoms. Piccinich scored 27 goals and 58 points in 60 games this year, good for second in team scoring and 13th in the USHL. Piccinich stands at 5'11 and weighs 190lbs.

The Leafs have traded defenceman Carl Gunnarsson and the 94th pick overall to the St. Louis Blues for defenceman Roman Polak.
I'm at the draft right now and when the trade was announced it was dead silent... Well, except for the guy behind me who yelled "THAT'S A HORRIBLE TRADE!" loud enough that the entire arena heard him.

With the 68th overall pick, the Toronto Maple Leafs selected Rinat Valiev of the Kootenay Ice. A 6'1, 196lb defender, Valiev put up scored five goals and 28 points in 55 games this past season.
