Who would have thought that this would be one of the biggest games of the year? Sure enough, the Leafs and Hurricanes are in a race for the bottom, and a big zero points tonight would be a big boost to the tank. Thankfully, that's exactly what they got.

Marlies lose to Utica in weekend opener

It's not likely, but at this point in the season, the Toronto Marlies still have a chance of making the Calder Cup palyoffs. At seven points back of eighth in the Western Conference, however, it would require a couple of solid winning streaks. This three-game weekend would have been a good place to start, but unfortunately, a 5-2 loss to the Utica Comets won't help accelerate the process.

Why (you should) fire Maple Leafs GM Dave Nonis?

Kevin McGran wrote a piece yesterday in the Toronto Star regarding his views on Dave Nonis. The basic summary; he's had the odd hiccup, and he's never gone through the major rebuild process before, but he's still the right man for the job. 

I respect Kevin a bunch, probably more than the rest of the Twittersphere does, but there's quite a bit of this argument that I disagree with. Let's break this down a bit.

LGD: Ron Francis Rivalry Renewed

Remember Ron Francis? It's only been 11 years since the Leafs made the decision to acquire the veteran at the trade deadline. With 1798, Francis holds the rare distinction of having the most regular season points in his career of any player to suit up for the Leafs. He only scored ten of those points in Toronto, but it's fair to say he's one of the organization's most memorable players.

Oh, and he's also the GM of the Leafs the teams are playing tonight, the Carolina Hurricanes.

If the HFBoards Started the Leafs Rebuild

Last year as the Leafs entered the off season I made the executive decision on behalf of Brendan Shanahan to let Nonis go, and replace him with the HFBoards, the results led to a roster that even Steve Tambellini would be embarrassed by.

That was the HFBoards first time out, and pencils have erasers for a reason. It’s time to hand the Leafs back over to the HFBoards and see what would happen if the HFBoards rebuilt the Leafs.
