#10 - Rinat Valiev
Rinat Valiev was an interesting pick for the Leafs. Drafted at a time when many recognizable names were still available, going with a 19 year old defender seemed like a strange decision. Fortunately, it looks like the move is paying off, as Valiev continues to be one of the better offensive defencemen in the Western Hockey League (17th in scoring by defencemen, was 49th last year), and his all around game is solid to boot.

It would seem that Darren Dreger will have to update his big board, and bump up the likelihood of Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mike Santorelli being dealt before the March 2nd NHL trade deadline.
There was reportedly some interest among Maple Leafs brass in re-signing Santorelli, a pending unrestricted free agent, to a contract extension. Efforts to reach a deal have reportedly hit a snag though, and Santorelli can expected to be shopped over the next few weeks, according to a report from Larry Brooks of the New York Post.

As the Leafs losing streak hits hilarious proportions, the rumors have ramped up surrounding the team. By all accounts, it sounds like the team will be selling off what they can at the trade deadline. That speculation was heightened immensely yesterday when TSN reported on the likelihood of players like Daniel Winnik, Tyler Bozak, and Joffrey Lupul being moved. Among that group of players of course was Cody Franson, a pending unrestricted free agent who Darren Dreger believes has an 85% chance of being moved by March 2nd.
Today, ESPN's Pierre LeBrun poured more gasoline on the fire when he reported in his Rumblings blog that GM Dave Nonis did not fly out with the rest of the team from Nashville Tuesday night. Rather, Nonis will stick around to scout Thursday's game. As LeBrun points out, that's likely to do some research on the possibility of a trade involving former Predator Cody Franson.

ICYMI, the Toronto Maple Leafs have been all kinds of horrible over the past several weeks. Like, losing-ten-games-in-a-row horrible. With that streak, the Leafs have dropped down the standings and are now pretty securely in the Connor McDavid sweepstakes.

At this point in my life, I've become the master of these 11AM school day games. The rules are simple - bring something to shield your ears. You gain next to nothing hearing the game on a day like this; mostly because it's drowned out by screaming children. I listened to music most of the game and I was at peace.
The Toronto Marlies, on the other hand, were not at peace, as they lost this one by a score of three to one.
