What Would You Do Wednesday – Goaltending Controversy!!!

Those [lovely people] at TSN threw up a video today called “Maple Leafs creating a distraction in net”, and it’s, uh, something. Careful not to call the Jonathan Bernier and James Reimer platoon a ‘goaltending controversy’, the video certainly hinted that things could maybe, potentially, perhaps boil over.

Let’s overreact, shall we?

The Situation

situation2

Listen, we can’t trust the Leafs to do the right thing here. TLN readers know better – we quite clearly demonstrate this each and every Wednesday.

Can you fix this goaltending situation/controversy/mess before Toronto breaks out in civil war? Do the Leafs need to name a number one goalie? Is Bernier the future, or in Reimer do you trust? Does someone need to be traded? To where? For what?

Or is this whole thing being blown way out of proportion?

Talk to me Goose (in the comments below).

This Person, Not So Much

leafer1967 has a real hate-on for Tyler Bozak and seems to be in love with this ‘Who Cares’ guy???

bad

Roll with it yo – the guys will push each other to perform to a higher standard (ideally), and if Carlyle actually stays with the “win and you’re in” thing (except on back to backs I guess) I think it will work out just peachy.

  • Unfortunatly I think they need to trade one, and while I do love him it should be Riemer that gets moved. And the sooner the better. He’s playing some of his best hockey right now and a team thats struggling in net would probably overpay for him.

but lets be real. they aren’t the problem… its randy carlyle.
A new coach, a new team.

  • nazemkadri43

I think the Leafs should stick with the current set up. It creates competition which leads to better performances. You play good, you get to keep playing (except for back to backs). I just hope they don’t “Canuck it” and lose both of them.

  • nazemkadri43

Reward success, roll with it until one of the young goalies pushes for a job.
Unless there is an impact trade in which case they can deal from strength

  • CMpuck

Love pointing out to people that despite Riemer’s ‘collapse’ last season that he still posted a .911 in front of a defensively challenged blueline only to be met with ‘Reimer sucks’.

Ok….. perhaps NYI might have been better off with Reims over Halak.

  • Jerkball

Why don’t we take the C off Dion and have 4 A’s. Honestly, make no diff and he maybe will be a better player. Right now, I think the leafs have the skill they are just lazy. This annoys me because I want them to be great but they lose because they don’t want to try. 🙁

The troubles of being a leaf fan… am I right?

  • Gonzomaus

Reimer doing well is a good thing. Not only for the obvious reasons, but Berniers contract is up at the end of the season. The more games Reimer plays and does well in, the less money you have to throw at Bernier at the end of the season.

  • jasken

You keep both and alternate let them play of each other and help each other succeed. When was the last time the Leafs had a 1-2 combo like these 2 good goalies? A very long time like 48 years.

  • Gonzomaus

I really think some of you guys don’t really get it. These are some people who are worse then “who cares”
    1. Bozak
    2. Clarkson
    3. Caryle
    4. Nonis
    5. Orr
    6. Mclaren
    7. Smithson
    8. Gleason

    • CMpuck

This is so irrelevant, Clarkson has a no-trade clause, Orr and McLaren play for the Marlies, Smithson and Gleason don’t even play for the Leafs anymore, and last I checked Bozak is second on the team in points and hasn’t been playing with Kesssl that entire time.

I’d trade Bernier for “who cares” and extend Reimer on a cheap long term contract to compensate for the lofty salaries of Clarkson and Phaneuf.

But Reimer has a 2 year deal so I’m ok if Bernier struggles this year so that will allow the leafs to extend Bernier cheaper (same thing for free agents Kadri, franson if they struggle).

The other important point is neither goalie has managed to play an entire season healthy and at a consistent high level so there is no need to rush a trade unless the leafs can’t say no to “who cares”

  • Benjamin

Ride the ‘hot hand’ and always alternate back-to-backs.

Its a god-send that they inked Reimer to that deal. You look at just one stat and keeping them both for as long as possible becomes your only reasonable option.

Years of 60+ games in a regular season.
    Reimer = 1 (2006-07)
    Bernier = 0

The jury is also still out on their true talent (read: career SV%) so until you’re really forced to make a decision, don’t. These boys are professionals and I’ve never heard a word of complaint from either re: the other. Its just the media trying to spin an old story to reach a deadline.

  • Benjamin

I find it ironic that when we (we meaning the media) talk about the forwards and defense, we use words like ‘competition’.

Yet when we talk about goaltending words like ‘controversy’ are used.

To those in the media – I would rather have this “controversy” in net that makes out goalies work harder and play better instead of the complacency that some teams, Winnipeg, have to suffer through.

I just hope the coaching staff doesn’t punish Reimer for the Arizona loss.

    • Benjamin

      I agree 100% with everything you said…..

I wish this Goalie crap would end and get on with the real problem which is the team itself…

As for Reims i hope they screw him either, he was the only member of the team that came to play and that is always his way, no matter what he plays with his heart and comes to compete the whole full 60 minutes+ unlike the team, they really sucked on Tuesday and once again Reims was on his own and was solid on Tuesday and deserves alot of credit for battleing the game on his own…

GO REIMS GO ! YOur my starter and always will be rather here or somewhere else….

I will always back Reims and I still think he is the REAL DEAL and will be great….I don’t see that with Bernier but again right now we have to fight another night and hopefully the team will do with their favorite, Bernie unlike what they did to Reims…

I hate to see Reims loose out to Bernier I have seen nothing in him this year to warrant him the starter job, and nothing that great last year either…

      • TGT23

That literally makes no sense. Reimer is a starter but Bernier, who has better or similar numbers to Reimer this year, far better last year, and was as good last year than Reimer has ever been, is not?

        Ignorance is bliss..

I say run them both with a ‘win you’re in’ mentality. Keep them sharp. Bernier will have an edge in starts, being the better goalie, but it will make him sharper. And he’ll need to be sharp to play on this team.
