WWYDW – If You Love Something, Let it Go?

There’s been a lot of talk – and I mean a lot of talk – about the possibility of Cody Franson being traded. Arguably the Leafs’ best defender this season, Franson becomes an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and the Leafs only have so much cap space available. As in, not nearly enough cap space available for what Franson would and should command on the open market.

I mean, stats be damned, he’s a top four, right-handed defender that stands six foot five inches tall. Those guys make bank.

The Situation

You absolutely cannot let Cody Franson walk for nothing, so there are really only two options. First, and perhaps most likely, you trade him. Second, you make other moves to open up some cap space, and resign him.

So what would you do? If you’re going to trade him, what are you looking for? Feel free to get detailed and offer up some trade proposals… You going to send him to Anaheim for a top prospect, or Dallas for a first round pick?

And if you’re doing to resign him, then what moves would you make to free up that cash money? Does keeping Franson mean moving a Phaneuf-like contract? Is that worth it?

Tell me in the comments below.

you need to absolutely free up cap space and if there is a trade market for frans sell sell sell. If they want to spend stupid money (5 m plus) then do it in the offseason. This team is too close to the cap without being championship caliber.
I love Winnik and Santo more, but would entertain offers there too.

I believe that how management deals with the Franson situation will gives a clear picture of how the next few seasons will play out.

Option 1) He walks as a UFA. Lame. Nonis would probably be fired for that.

Option 2) He resigns with the Leafs. The only way this happens, as Justin says, is by moving other contracts. Kadri and Bernier will be resigned, which would mean that the leafs would have to free up 4-6 million in cap space just to keep Franson. Does management get creative and somehow move Robidas/Polak/Clarkson? Probably not. Kessel? That would be both easy and stupid. That means that the leafs would most likely have to trade Phaneuf to keep Franson.

Option 3) Trade him. This is the most likely scenario. Hopefully the human glacier of negotions AKA Nonis can architect a deal to bring in assets so they don’t lose Franson for nothing. I believe this is a terrible idea. The Leafs have a surplus of LD, and only 2 other NHL defenceman in their system.

In conclusion, I believe the best course of action would be to trade a surplus left-side defenceman to free up space to keep Franson.

yeah, the crushingly depressing sidebar to all of this is the likelihood that were in for a long ass rebuild, considering our level of bad/long term contracts – even if we sign Franson, are we going to be in a position to contend during that contract?

Id be cool with flipping him and others (Phaneuf, Lupul…get a GM drunk and trade them Clarkson?) at the deadline, taking back bad, shorter term deals if need be. Then, of course, have a doctor put me in a state of suspended animation for like 3-4 years.

  • I would trade him.

To either the Ducks, Penguins, Islanders, or Red Wings.

    In Return..

Anaheim : Shea Theodore (Played on top D pair for Canada at world juniors)

Pittsburgh: Scott Harrington (Very good 21 year old defensive d-man)

New York: Griffin Reinhart (Should be in NHL but Boychuck & Leddy pushed him out)

Detroit: (LESS REALISTIC OPTION) One of the following… Thomas Tatar, Gustav Nyquist, Riley Sheahan, Dylan Larkin or Anthony Mantha.

Or see if someone is stupid enough to give us a first round pick.

And trade him A.S.A.P… every day that we get closer to the deadline his trade value goes down. Get the deal done early.

    • Sorry to bring you back to real worldsville but you do realize that the leafs had a deal completed for Franson before the season which would have landed the pylon Josh Gorges. Bottom line the best the leafs will get for Franson is a second round pick. Quick how many first rounders have been given up at the trade dead line over the past couple of years.

Yeah, yeah I know the leafs over the years have specialized in giving up draft picks. Teams aren’t as stupid as they use to be. Well the leafs being the exception.

But heh lots of leaf fans dream away in their leaf pyjamas of getting Tatar or Nyquist for a pylon.

      • Sorry to bring YOU back but Franson has significantly improved this year playing on the top pairing and he has become a player other teams would love to have. And and a player we can no longer afford.

Also to quickly answer you other question…. How about David Perron for a first like a few weeks ago. How about Garth Snow trading Moulson and a first for Vanek last year. Is it a stupid move? Yeah, but it DOES happen.

Also hey did you notice i put (LESS REALISTIC OPTION) beside Detroit for a reason?

The other three teams are at a point where they are trying to Win in the playoffs and Franson will help them. They are willing to give up prospects for players who are good RIGHT NOW. Because they are trying to win the cup today, not 5 years from now.

        ….MIC DROP…

Unless other team is assured Frans on will sigh longterm the asset coming back will not be a homerun (that’s a baseball analogy meaning frigging awesome)

  • Jerkball

I would try to trade Phaneuf, Lupul and Bozak and use the money to resign Franson. If they absolutely have to trade him, then try to get at least a 2nd round pick for him, hopefully from a bottom feeder team.

  • CMpuck

I think they should trade every UFA on the team, for young players or draft choices. They need to trade Kessel, Phaneuf, Bozak, and any other player they can for good young players and rebuild this team the right way.
