Leafs Trade Korbinian Holzer To Anaheim

The trade deadline has come and gone, but with that said, the Leafs have managed to sneak in another move. This time, they’ve sent Korbinian Holzer to the Anaheim Ducks for Eric Brewer and a draft pick.

What The?

This isn’t really a hockey trade. Holzer has enticed teams for a while due to his size and physicality, but hasn’t really turned that into any sort of positive result in the NHL just yet. On the other hand, his contract is a very affordable one at $788,000, whereas Eric Brewer carries a cap hit of $2.868 million.

At the same time, the Ducks have been pretty busy today, and most notably acquired James Wisinewski from the Columbus Blue Jackets for Rene Bourque, William Karlsson, and a second round pick. Making this trade puts the Ducks under the cap and buys the Leafs another asset.

Brewer is 35 years old and has six points in 26 games with the Ducks and Tampa Bya Lightning this year. He was traded to the Ducks for a third round pick in December and has previously played for St. Louis, Edmonton, and the New York Islanders.

The pick is a 5th round pick. Brewers deal ends after this season. So essentially we are giving the Ducks a cash dump & another UFA dman in order to get that 5th round pick

Its a shame this trade came so late, as maybe Brewer could’ve been flipped before the deadline if they had more time. Also feel bad for Brewer who is an older player who I’m sure wanted to be part of the playoff run in Anaheim.

In the end, its the Leafs essentially buying a draft pick. Gotta like the deal, something from nothing

Am I the only Leafs watcher who thought Holzer looked slimmer, fitter and faster than he had the last two seasons? He even improved his puck handling.

Sure, he made some dumb giveways, but virtually efery Leafs d man has/does/did.

I liked his game, but c’est la vie.

35-year old Eric Brewer with 38-year old Stephane Robidas will look great back there for the next month.

I think it was a good trade.

Brewer can hopefully coach the Leaf leaders some good lessons.

Bottom line…Leafs need a playmaker like Krejci, Plekanec, Elias, Datsyuk, Kovalev, etc.

Without one, they will continue to struggle. The last good playmaker was perhaps Gilmour.

Yet again we have to go back to the MLG era and not the ACC mausoleum present.
