It looks like Mark Hunter got his guy.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have drafted London Knights forward Mitchell Marner with the 4th pick of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. I imagine he’s pretty happy about it.

While there was certainly a lot of talk about the Leafs looking at other players this year, namingly Boston College’s Noah Hanifin, Brandon’s Ivan Provorov and Seattle’s Mathew Barzal, Toronto ultimately went with the player they were most familiar with. Hunter was the GM in London that drafted Marner in the 2013 OHL Priority Draft.

Undersized at 5’10 and 161lbs, Marner uses elite offensive skill and speed to avoid defenders and get into prime scoring positions. In 63 games this season, Marner scored a very impressive 44 goals and 126 points for the Knights.

As expected, Erie’s Connor McDavid Otters was selected first overall by the Edmonton Oilers, followed by Boston University’s Jack Eichel by the Buffalo Sabres. With the third pick, the Arizona Coyotes snapped up Erie’s Dylan Strome.

More on the newest Leaf, Mitch Marner, to follow!

Now this is the kind of good news I can get behind :).

Picked an insanely skilled forward. A guy who may still play center going forward and regardless is insanely skilled. Marner and Nylander? Yep, that’s a pretty good base for the forward offense.

Generally speaking no (the 70s Habs best player was a winger) but they aren’t done this year to say nothing the entire rebuild.

Kane, Hossa, Brown, Stamkos, St Louis, Elias ….. Lots of wingers play very big abd important roles on very good and cup winning teams.

Marner wasn’t my first choice but I’m very happy he is a leaf. By all accounts he is a very good two way player (why I don’t like the Kane comparison) which will make him a very good compliment to a top line center (not that talented but defended liability winger) or a candidate to move over to center.

Then it’s probably good they have Nylander, Kadri, Bozak, Holland, Leo, Bailey, to start with and can figure the rest out in trades, Free Agency, or, I don’t know, any of the drafts over the next two years of the rebuild.

While I would have preferred Ivan Provorov, Marner should turn out to be a serviceable player. However, I will point out that members of this site have been complaining for 4 years about their highly skilled winger being dragged down by an average center ice man. Now we have three highly skilled wingers and still no centre. NHL teams do not win with their best players being on the wing.

Again while I’m sure Marner will be a very good player this rebuild still has a long long way to go. From everything I have read Provorov is going to a Duncan Keith type of player and Marner is similar to Kane. While I love Kane, I will take Keith each and every day.

You guys can say it doesn’t matter as much as you want, but I truly believe it was important for the Leafs to pick a Canadian to start off the non-Nonis era and that is why I am happy they went with Marner over Provorov. He grew up a Leafs fan and that’s why he’ll be elite

I really like this selection, but kind of expected… Not sure about Steve Uruski’s problem… The Shanahan hate is unjustified
But I do think that they will need to get a solid bottom six guy or a couple that can defend all these guys, the other team needs to know they can’t walk all over them, I like a guy like Zach Sill staying around
