Give us your best trade proposals for a chance to win a Violent Gents gift card

We are t-minus 30 days until the NHL Trade Deadline, meaning we’ve got a tonne of trades and rumours to break down and debate just around the corner. I don’t see any need to wait any longer, so let’s kick TLN’s deadline coverage off with a bang (and a lucrative contest)!

So here’s what we’re going to do – you, the readers of TLN, are going to send us your very best Maple Leafs trade proposals. You can leave them in the comments below, or tweet us at @TLNdc, or drop us a line on our Facebook Page, or hire a dude with a plane to write it in the sky above Toronto. Don’t worry, I’ll see it. Make sure to include in your trade proposals who the Leafs are going to trade, where they’re going to be traded to, and what the Leafs are going to get back in return.

As the deadline gets closer, our staff will pick the best trade proposals sent in and pick the big winner. The grand prize? A $50 Violent Gentlemen gift card courtesy of our most violent and gentlemanly friends at VG.

(But hey, just don’t get the Bure tee because I’m already rockin’ it around the city.)

So, what’s it gonna be? Do they trade P.A. Parenteau for picks? Leo Komarov for a good prospect or two? Picks and youngsters for Steven Stamkos? Just kidding! He’ll sign here on July 1st anyways. Let us know, and you just might win a cool prize and the adoration of all your fellow Leafs fans.

Phaneuf and Polak for Zach Werenski and Columbus’ first.

Gardiner, Polak and Komarov for Nikolaj Ehlers and a 3rd Round Pick.

Phaneuf and Connor Brown for Leon Draisaitl and a 3rd Round Pick.

Polak to the Pens for their 2016 2nd (ANA)
    – this will help them secure the playoffs, thus securing our 1st pick.

Boyes to Anaheim for their own 3rd
    – they could use another veteran shooter in their lineup for secondary scoring.

Phaneuf to Dallas for Stephen Johns, and their 2nd.
    – Johns is a big bodied right shooting D man, looking for an opportunity. He should be able to out perform Marincin. Leafs will retain $1M.

    Bernier to Calgary for Hiller
    – a straight up hockey trade, to shed Bernier’s contract, and give him opportunity in another city. Hiller will be a UFA this summer.

Boyes to Nashville for their 3rd
    – they could use another scoring option. Boyes could play in their top 6 and powerplay if given the chance.

Percy to Edmonton for Nikita Nikitin and a 3rd
    – I’m not convinced with Percy’s future with the club. He’s from the old regime and has value as a 1st rounder. Nikitin will be a UFA and this will free Edmonton cap space, and is not on the main roster right now. Percy could theoretically slot right in.

    Bozak to Tampa for a 2017 2nd
    – this would happen at the draft, and would ‘help’ them out in the case that both Stamkos walks and Druin is traded. I don’t want Druin and his baggage.
This is what I got this far.

Wow I got trashed 13 times with my JVR and Bozak trades…do I win? It’s great you take the time to read my proposals and I’m cool with getting trashed but unless you respond me tell me why you are trashing the trade, your just pushing a button.

    • Gary Empey

I didn’t trash you but my guess is because of our lack of scoring most folks are not keen on parting with JVR.

Perhaps someone else could critique your trades and show you where you went wrong.

    • Gary Empey

Nope, my Kadri trade has 16 and counting. I agree, it my proposal is so idiotic, point out the major flaws and then come up with something better. Remember, we will have to give something to get something too!

      • Gary Empey

I only seen 15 trashes for your trade proposal. So I bumped it up to the 16 you thought you had.

Montreal would only be moving an unprotected 1st and Gallagher for a proven elite player like Stamkos. Kadri has 10 goals and 14 assists. Brendan Gallagher has 12 goals and 14 assists. That could be considered a draw. That means the rest of your trade would basically be Lipsic for Montreal’s unprotected first and Eller.

        Hence the trashes.

If Montreal were to make that deal, I would expect someone to end up the same way as Jimmy Hoffa.

  • Gary Empey

Dion Phaneuf, P.A. Parenteau and Kasperi Kapanen to Tampa for Steve Stamkos and Jonathan Drouin.

Retain a little salary for Phaneuf to close the deal, if necessary.

    • Harte of a Lion

Leafs can’t retain salary on any trades untill after this season. I believe a team can retain salary on only 2 contracts and we currently have Kessel and Gunnarson on the books. Gunnarson comes off at the end of this season.

At this time I would rather keep Dion, Babcock has him playing good hockey and aparently Lou thinks very highly of him as captain.

If the team really wants to move him they could always leave him unprotected during the expansion draft with the hopes that an expansion team sees him as a cornerstone plus they do need to make the cap floor.

      • Gary Empey

You can keep up to 50% of the cap and salary commitment to a player you trade.

You can only have such commitments to three players at any given time.

The total of your “retained salary” commitments cannot exceed 15% of the cap’s upper limit.

The Leafs may not wish to really want to move Phaneuf but I am sure they would like to avoid a bidding war over Stamkos.

What “Lou” says publicly and what he really thinks may be two entirely different things.

  • Harte of a Lion

Polak Grabner and Paranteau to the Penguins for 2017 2nd, 2018 2nd and 3rd.
We bolster the Penguins hoping they make the playoffs and bank some picks down the road.
Mathias to the Panthers for a 2017 3rd
Boyes and Bernier to Montreal for 2017 2nd, 2018 3rd

If Montreal wants Reimer, it will cost them a 1st. For the Canadians fans who say it’s too much, aren’t they the same fans who see Montreal climbing back up the standings so…it will be a late 1st round pick… Right?
If Montreal has any hope of salvaging this season, they need more scoring and a goalie that can play 40% of the games until Price can shoulder the entire load again. If they think that Price will come back and play 8 or 9 of every 10 games left, they are dreaming and he will hurt himself again.

    • Gary Empey

It is true that we have recently made some trades with the Penguins, I feel we may have worn out our welcome there. The Penguins seem to get stiffed on every deal they make with us.

  • Harte of a Lion

Leafs pick up J Scott from waivers/ Send him to the Marlies so we have someone to pound the crap out of any AHL player who looks the wrong way at any of our young Marlie stars
