Leafs Postgame: Mission Accomplished

tankprojection

With the polls now closed, we at TLN are ready to project the Toronto Maple Leafs as the winner of one of the hardest fought campaigns in recent memory.

How Was the Game?

Mission Accomplished

Now that 30th place is clinched this season, the fun part can begin. From here on out the message should be building, not tanking.

We won’t need these anymore:

I never cheered for them to lose, hopefully the hockey gods will smile on the Leafs and whoever they pick ends up being the best player in the draft…. for those who have suffered from Tankitis this season and prayed for the first pick, can you say Alexander Daigle? All talent, no heart.

McDavid, Ekblad, MacKinnon, Nugent-Hopkins, Hall, Tavares, Stamkos, Kane, Johnson, Crosby, Ovechkin, Fleury, Nash, Kovalchuk, Lecavalier, Thornton, Phillips…

17 of the last 20 First Overall picks have become stars, starters, or at the absolute very least are productive NHL regulars. The worst of which being Chris Phillips who played 1179 games with Ottawa and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins who is a very good 2nd line C with 50+ points the last two years.

Dipietro, Stefan, and Yakupov are the only ones I think you can call busts, but Yakupov is only 22. Could still become something.

They’ve accomplished a few goals in the last 12 months. Management should be proud of themselves thus far.

    They moved some big contracts.
They acquired some draft picks throughout the year.
They acquired some very useful players who might contribute in the future (Hyman, Corrado, Marincin)
They developed some really good, young players in the AHL most of the year.
They got many of those kids a cup of coffee in the NHL and with Babcock. Enough time to examine where their development was at.
They were surprisingly competitive in the last month or so of the season while having a bunch of those kids up.
They finished last and have the best chance at Auston Matthews.

Whatever happens from here is out of their hands but we’re at least guaranteed a very good pick and the kids know they can hang at the NHL level. Despite the record, this was a successful season in Leaf Nation.

Cheers to all for a good tank season – honestly could not have been executed more masterfully in my opinion. Now let the fun begin!!! T minus three weeks until the draft lotto

Finishing last is all I demanded from management, they did their part to push this franchise forward.

It’s at least one or two more tank seasons, hope for the same next season then enjoy the spoils. This management team leaves me wanting nothing more from their efforts. Perfect tank job.

      No, no more tanking!!!

Build and develop through competitive play, and no more burying the Nylander and Hymans. May the best team be iced, and from within before going to free agency. Allow Komarov, Greening, Laich, Michalek, and maybe Bozak and Hunwick guide the team.
Yes, a full season of Nylander, Hyman, Brown, Soshnikov, Leivo, Carrick, and maybe Lindberg!

I love that we list our forwards and completely ignore the blueline beyond Rielly.

Given Lou loaded up on salary dumps that extended through next season, the writing is on the wall for this team next year.

The blind homerism in this site’s comments section never ceases to amaze me.

The Leafs still have 0 players that project as a top 25 talent in the league.

        • TGT23

Actually, you just entirely ignore when people do.

Reilly, Gardiner, Marincin, Corrado, Carrick, Percy, Harrington, Loov, Valiev, Nielsen, Dermott.

Possibly Zeitsev. Nevermind they have a gluttony of forward prospect and draft pick wealth they can use to acquire more D-Men.

Sure, they could use another top pairing guy, but you seem to act as if they have no one back there. The players listed can easily make up a D-Core with some fantastic depth. Pairing them correctly has led to some good results. An improvement in goaltending and this team is going to be much better next season.

Perhaps not a playoff team, but definitely not in the battle for last.

Top 25, what? Players? Skaters? Depending on how you rank them there are 22-25 teams that don’t have a Top 25 talent since some teams have 2-3. Somehow, they manage to be competitive.

          • TGT23

No surprise, you’ve missed my point entirely.

I didn’t say they don’t need another #1 D, what I said was you can’t pretend they have NO talent on D. They have an entire D-Core worth of talent, a ton of depth, a lot of players with upside. And you acting like they only have Reilly is ridiculous.

Further, I said your point that they don’t have a Top 25 guy is stupid because 22-25 teams don’t. You can be competitive with an elite skater. Most competitive teams are.

Which is directly contradictory to your point that they’ll definitely finish in the fight for last because they don’t have one. If the last month or so has shown us, with decent goaltending, this team can win games.

But, reading is hard and you shouldn’t be forced to do it in order to judge what someone else said. Just make stuff up, as always.
