Leafs Postgame: Capital Punishment

It’s 12:15 AM and none of us really liked that game, so we’re going to make this the briefest postgame in TLN history and cut straight to the chase. First, here are the highlights:

The Leafs weren’t good tonight. They kept the fancy stats close, but they were outmuscled, outskated, and on almost all of their goals, outplayed. Par for the course when you’re facing a Presidents Trophy caliber team, but you still hoped for a more livid effort given what was at stake.

Also, Brian Boyle might be hurt:

The good news is that the Bruins ran the tables on the Lightning tonight. That sounds bad for the sake of first round matchup implications, but on the positive side, that means that Thursday is both a fun potential clinching scenario, and not a complete and total catastrophe if it doesn’t go well (but still somewhat panic inducing).

That game will be at 7:30 PM. Be ready for it. But forget this one ever happened, unless you’re doing video in the event that this becomes a Round 1 or 2 series.

What do you mean 12:15 a.m. it is 9:15 p.m. out in God’s country. Jeff you are in the prime of your life, a vibrant young man who can go 24 hours, so yeah I wanted War and Peace volume two tonight.
Tonight was an important lesson as the leafs met the class of the league who have been stomping on everyone throughout the season. An obviously tired squad who had matched Washington’s record over the past couple of weeks. Good to see Marvelous Mitch get his 19th tonight.
Get some rest guys, and you too Jeff as I’m going out to party, and Thursday baby we take the Bolts and Islanders out of their misery and clinch a playoff spot Whoooooo. Go leafs Go.

I was wondering how much the Leafs would have to give, after expending so much effort the night before in Buffalo. The obvious take from tonight was the Leafs got out-muscled due to size and ran out of gas in the 3rd. The Leafs did have their moments to score so, I wouldn’t say it was solely a one-sided affair during the first 2 periods. The only thing I wanted to see in the 3rd, once the game was out of reach was somebody run OV. The SOB is as dirty as they come and somebody should have dished out some of the abuse he was giving.

Sweet deflection pass by JVR on the Marner goal.

Yeah, that sucked. Moving on to the next one.

Would have been great to sneak out a win here and have the rest of the season be a bit less stress inducing. But such is. Makes the Tampa game an important one. Hopefully they stick to the pattern and bring their A game after a bad showing. They have the ability to beat Tampa, but have to go and do it.

A super hot goalie with a side of hitting. I forgot how physical Washington could be. Ovechkin and Wilson laid out a half dozen BIG hits. Whoever faces them in the first round is going to earn some bruises.
