Alexey Marchenko to continue hockey career in Russia, Maple Leafs now at 48 contracts

Yesterday, the Toronto Maple Leafs placed defenceman Alexey Marchenko on waivers for the purpose of a contract termination. Today, it was confirmed that Marchenko was bought out because he wanted to pursue his hockey career in his native country of Russia. Marchenko has reportedly inked a three-year deal with CSKA Moscow of the KHL.

Marchenko, who was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in 2011, spent parts of four seasons with CSKA before coming to North America for the 2013-14 season. Last season, the Leafs claimed him off waivers from the Red Wings. He played 11 games recording two points in essentially a bench role in Toronto.

What does this mean for the Leafs? They’re completely off the hook for Marchenko’s contract, which would have cost them $1.45 million against the cap this season. That, of course, slides them a little closer to the cap ceiling and it gives them another contract slot to potentially use on a free agent.

One of those contract slots will be Connor Brown, who, as you know, is still an RFA. The other could be used on somebody like NCAA free agent Will Butcher or it could be saved for the Leafs to acquire a player via trade during the season if the need arises.

The poll above asks which Center should Marleau play with. Not sure Matthews is best suited to be his centerman as Marleau is a similar player as Matthews in the sense that he shoots more than he passes. He’s had Thornton feed him for years. I guess the question is would he take away from Matthews production? It leaves Nylander with plenty of options to pass to however. Thoughts?

JVR isnt coming off Bozaks line unless his traded, and Kadri’s line is a shutdown one and I’m not sure Marleau is suited for that.

The poll asks a great question and maybe I just answered my own inquisition.

    I’m bored.
