Marlies Sign Jeff Glass to AHL Contract

With the 2018-2019 season set to kick-off in a couple of days, the Toronto Marlies announced the addition of another goalie to the fold.

The Marlies have signed Jeff Glass, 32, to an AHL contract. Glass, who suited up for two games with the Marlies during the 2016-2017 season, split last season with the Chicago Blackhawks, and their AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs.

Glass’ 2017-2018 stats

Rockford (AHL): 15-9-2 record, 2.82 GAA, 9.04 save percentage.

Chicago (NHL): 3-7-3 record, 3.36 GAA, .898 save percentage.

The addition of Glass has come in timely fashion for a Marlies team that was on the cusp of entering this season without another, reliable, goalie to support Kasimir Kaskisuo in the crease.

While Kaskisuo was the Chicago Wolves starter last season (13-13-0 record, 2.38 GAA, .914 SV%), he’s yet to suit up for more than 28 games in a season, at the AHL level. With all the potential that Kaskisuo has, the Marlies will benefit from having someone like Glass to challenge Kaskisuo and split some of the workload.

In the AHL, where teams commonly play three games in three days, it’s crucial to have a strong goalie tandem, and adding Glass, who has 13 years of professional hockey experience under his belt, could pay dividends for the Leafs AHL organization.

Plus, even with Glass signed to an AHL contract, the move provides the Leafs with a bit of insurance, too. If either Andersen or Sparks were to get injured, it may make more sense for the Leafs to sign Glass to an NHL contract, put him as the backup, and allow Kaskisuo to continue to develop in the AHL.

The AHL Season is Almost Underway

The Marlies season-opener will take place on Oct 5, in Utica.

The home-opener will be at Coca Cola Coliseum on Oct 8, where the Marlies will hold a brief ceremony commemorating last seasons Calder Cup championship. Puck drop for the home-opener is slated for 3:00 pm ET.
