First Star, Worst Star: December 21, 2014

Everyone ready for Christmas? I usually leave all my gift getting until the last minute but I’m feeling generous so today my present to everyone is this weeks First Star, Worst Star!

FIRST STAR

The Flames are in a bit of a tailspin right, having now lost 8 straight games and dropping out of the playoff picture. But not to worry Flames fans, your team is still putting a highly skilled, highly entertaining team on the ice. Just take this goal from defenseman Dennis Wideman.

To hit the middle of the net, from the corner on the opposite side of the rink? Move over Giordano, there’s a new number one D-man in Cowtown! As far as I’m concerned it’ll be virtually impossible to knock this one out of Goal Of The Year contention, but if any team can do it, it’ll be the Flames!

WORST STAR

Most of us who grew up playing minor hockey got at least one shot at playing goalie. Most of the time it didn’t work out that well, because playing goalie is VERY difficult. Even the worst of us probably had a better outing than Ottawa Senators property Andrew Hammond.

3 goals on 3 shots in the first 36 seconds of the game. Even the Oilers haven’t managed this level of ineptitude this year!

I’ll give Hammond a pass on the first goal; it was a combination of nice passing from the Phantoms and horrific defensive coverage by the Senators, and he did the best he could to throw himself in front of the puck. After that though it was like his brain completely shut off and he had never even heard of the concept of hockey before. It was a game to forget, but thankfully for the internet this will live on forever and ever and if we really want to we can never let Andrew Hammond live this down. WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE!

“Oilers GM Craig MacTavish today announced the signing of goalie Andrew Hammond to a 6 year contract, claims ‘this kid will win the Vezina someday’.”

Cow town and Vancouver are sucking hind t!t too … When do they pull out the pitch forks as they have absolutely nothing to be proud of …. EVER – that’s before the 80’s btw!

    Off Topic :

I was read an article at stated that Toronto was possibly interested in hiring Eakins. The guy may be laughing all the way to the bank.

It brought me to another story which allude to what Eakins was trying to do here.

    http://www.thestar.com/sports/leafs/2012/03/07/toronto_marlies_praise_coach_dallas_eakins_after_leafs_snub.html

What he was trying to do:

“Our identity as a team is (based on playing) strong in our defensive zone and having puck control down low in the offensive zone.

What he was trying to avoid:

“the recent mini-slump has been the result of opponents increasing pressure in the Marlies’ zone, forcing turnovers. They have also been a bit reluctant to shoot, overpassing and losing possession”.

I think that he tried to replicate what he was doing in the AHL and it just did not work and he could not adapt his strategies to fit the players he had. A coach has to play what he has and not try to fit a square into a round hole (IMHO).

I understand why flames fans rip on the oilers. They are the laughing stock of the league but I just don’t know how they are so blind to see that they will literally be in the basement for the next 6+ years.

To Hammond’s defence, to my eye only the third goal was his fault. On the second, his own player completely screens him, and it was a really good shot by the Phantom’s player.

    Feel bad for the guy.

Ok…the first one was a good 2 on 1 play that got finished. Not Hammond’s fault.
On the 2nd goal, Hammond’s positioning is way too far to the left. It is as tho he lost track of where his net was. One foot to the right, and the 2nd one is a blocker save, so totally his fault. Besides, the D-Man “screening him” is already out of the line of sight when the Phantoms player shoots.
The 3rd one…Victor Fasth anybody? Enuff said…EVERYBODY whiffs once in a while. But still, totally his fault.

So yeah….First goal…NOT his fault. Second and Third goals….It was like he drank a Slurpee too fast….Brain Freeze.

I don’t know if it’s just a coincidence or not, but ever since big mouth Brian Burke called the media to announce that the Flames were only at 50 million of their cap, he was prepared to spend, spend, spend to get into the playoffs. Up until that the Flames had an awesome record and definitely heading in the right direction. Just like the rest of the Oilers fan base, i want to see the Flames and Cansucks fail too, but i really think Burkes comments crippled their psyche.

Now as far as Hammond goes, visually, he sucks.

Can’t understand the amusement over the poor guy’s misfortune. As a goalie parent, I can imagine what the parents are going through – heartache for their son, worry about suicidal thoughts, etc. I hope he storms back and gets a shutout in his next game.
