  • Am I right?

Calgary has a lot of bad contracts coming off the books at the end of next season. They also have to sign some expensive long term contracts this year.

It was not mentioned in the article or comments about the option of giving 1 or 2 year bridge deals to their RFA’s.

    • freethe flames

Very unlikely that either Johnny or Monny sign a bridge; the trend in the NHL for guys who have produced at this level get long term deals. Guys who have struggled like Nichuskyn will get bridge deals

      • Am I right?

I agree with you that is the usual reason you would bridge a player, because a bridge is generally a “show me” contract, which I think Johnny and Monny already have done.

But what about a player helping out his team for a year to clear up bad contracts, so he can be given what he deserves the next year, if presented that way.

RFA’s have zero power in contact negotiations, they would have little choice but to sign. Also I think they are decent young men that would do it for the team if asked and not pout about it.

The team gets the players on the cheap and an extra year under contract. The players bite the bullet for a year, then are rewarded handsomely the next year.

You could even add the few million saved this year from them, to put on their long term contracts next year when the team has tons of cap space, so they lose no money.

Just saying there are other and better options besides LTIR and buyouts.

    From the expansion lottery article

For a hypothetical expansion team, it’s hard to imagine a much better target than Griffin Reinhart.
