Marner is reportedly in talks to play for the Zurich Lions of the Swiss League, so let’s laugh about it

If you pay enough attention to a lot of contract negotiations, you can see patterns emerge pretty quickly with how agents go about their business, particularly in negotiating through the media. To this point in the summer we’ve already been given a masterclass from Mitch Marner’s “camp” in this regard, with agent Darren Ferris going to some lengths to ensure his client’s contract ask is always in the forefront of Toronto news.

For a lot of fans (and I’m sure the team itself) this part of the playbook probably got tiring quickly, but it is part of what agents do. And given Ferris’s previous negotiations for clients Andreas Athanasiou, Josh Anderson and Sam Bennett, we were wondering when the whole “he’s going to go play overseas if he doesn’t get paid” card would be played.

Here are those receipts:

Well, apparently for Marner that day is today, with “sources” telling Sportsnet’s Rick Dhaliwal that his representatives have asked about suiting up for the Zurich Lions of the Swiss League this season if he can’t come to an agreement with the Leafs.

I really can’t stress enough how false this is, but it’s worth noting here anyway just to point out how we could always see a “report” like this coming from a mile away given who’s involved. The only surprising part is that it seems to be about two weeks early and not through the usual channel. Marner has not talked with the Lions in any meaningful way, they’re just the team his agent picked to put in the news.

UPDATE:

Essentially straight from Ferris himself. Incredible.

Kind of a joke is it not? Will Zurich pay the 11+million? Or is Marner’s camp willing to roll the dice and play for much less than what he would get paid for the Leafs, just to prove his point?

Can’t the Leafs just start shopping Marner’s rights through a trade?

Dubas told too many people how he wanted to play poker. If I remember there was news regarding a contract presented to Shanny; one where Dubas and the Marner camp shared some kind of consensus. Shanny clearly believed that the agreement between the Dubas and Marner camp didn’t fit the plans for the Leaf’s at the strategic level of vision.

Marner might be 6 foot something and he might almost break 180 covered in wet clothing after a torrential down pour. He still looks…. small on the ice. He really looks fragile sometimes and very vulnerable. He does take risks every so often. One of these games he’s going to get plastered. He’s going to get hit really hard.

We can talk about how much the game of hockey has changed. But.. the St. Louis Blues came out hitting everything in sight. Cheap shots were fair game if taking those shots made the game winnable. I’m actually happy Tyler Bozak joined a winner. That man earned every bruise he received on the ice playing every shift he did for the Leafs.

What is the potential return value for Mitch Marner right now and how can that return be maximized to improve the Leaf’s team? I guess this is the critical moment where the Leafs don’t want anyone to present the Marner camp with an offer sheet through a news conference. But… what if the Leaf brass called a news conference and invited the NHL to start sending in their offer sheets, or trade offers in, before August 27, 2019?

Mitch can decide who, where, and how much, he wants to play for… right away!

My only concern in that process might be. If had the ear of Shanny and Dubas. I’d suggest they consult John Taveres and ask for a list of 20 player he believes can replace Mitch Marner and make the Maple Leafs a better team.
