After a trade, the Leafs have nabbed a pick to get Pontus Holmberg from Vaxjo in Sweden.
Holmberg played most of the year in the 3rd tier men’s league in Sweden, Hockeyettan (Division 1), with VIK Västerås. He has signed a contract to play for Vaxjo Lakers next season. He made that team for just 2 games this year on loan from his Division 1 club.
Holmberg, like Mac Hollowell, the Leafs’ 4th round pick, and Sean Durzi, their 2nd round pick, is on his 2nd time through the draft. The overager has been a solid contributor on the lower tier Swedish squad, with 20 points in 26 games. Here’s his full stats profile, from eliteprospects.com.
Holmberg is touted as a speedy playmaking winger who is creatively intelligent on the ice.
