With a new contract for leading scorer Mitch Marner still unfinished business for the team, the Toronto Maple Leafs enter the summer months a step back of the betting favourites on the 2020 Stanley Cup odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Marner, after putting up a team-high 94 points last season, remains a restricted free agent as he looks to cash in on his career-best campaign. The Maple Leafs have managed to sign fellow restricted free agent forwards Andreas Johnsson and Kasperi Kapanan to new deals this offseason, while also inking veteran forward Jason Spezza to a one-year contract.
And the Maple Leafs also pulled off a deal with the Colorado Avalanche, sending forward Nazem Kadri and defenseman Calle Rosen west in return for forward Alexander Kerfoot and defenseman Tyson Barrie. Kerfoot put up 42 points in 78 games for the Avalanche last season, while Barrie had 59 points in 78 games. Kadri had 44 points in 73 games for Toronto.
Toronto’s busy summer also included another deal, as they sent defenseman Nikita Zaitsev and forward Connor Brown to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for defensemen Cody Ceci and Ben Harpur. As well, defenseman Ron Hainsey left the team as an unrestricted free agent to sign with the Senators, while defenseman Jake Gardiner remains an unrestricted free agent and looks unlikely to return to Toronto. Gardiner had 30 points in 62 games last season.
The team also shipped forward Patrick Marleau to the Carolina Hurricanes in a cap dump.
Add up all those summer moves, and oddsmakers have the Maple Leafs set at +1200 (wager $100 to win $1200) on the latest odds to win the Stanley Cup, putting them behind the favoured Tampa Bay Lightning (+700) along with the Boston Bruins and Vegas Golden Knights (+1000). The Avalanche join the Maple Leafs at +1200 on those NHL odds at sportsbooks.
With the pool of available unrestricted free agents now slim pickings, the Maple Leafs should be able to hold onto their spot near the top of the Stanley Cup odds throughout the summer – barring, of course, Marner leaving the team either via a trade or an unmatched offer sheet.
