Are the Leafs re-introducing the Toronto Arenas jersey? (They definitely should be)

As part of the NHL’s continuing “Stadium Series” of outdoor games, the Leafs are set to take on the Capitals this season at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. With that matchup confirmed for March 3rd in Annapolis, MD, we can expect at some point for the two teams to unveil a special edition jersey they’ll wear that evening. This obviously isn’t new, as teams that participate in these events usually try something a bit outrageous (see: Ducks in orange) or perhaps more subtle, like a throwback.
Either way, fans get some new merchandise to ponder buying, like the Leafs’ jersey below, used in last year’s Centennial Classic in Toronto. I honestly think I see more of these on the streets than the regular home/away rotation.

Now, each time the Leafs have been involved in these games, fans get to kick around some ideas on what they should create or re-visit. One favourite I’ve always had is the old Toronto Arenas sweater, and I know I’m not alone in my love for that uniform.
Well, it looks as though these could finally be on the table this year, as some Reddit sleuthing has drawn speculation about the “T” jersey getting its revival. One poster in the Leafs subreddit community pointed out that at the sports store they work at, orders for new gear hint at the Arenas sweater being used at the Caps game or potentially sooner:
Under Maple Leafs, there was a whole section devoted to Toronto Arenas gear. With no alternates this year, that leads me to believe that the Leafs could be using an Arenas jersey at the Stadium Series. They are also doing a mid afternoon game to commemorate the Arenas first game, where they could also use the jersey.
If I had to bet, I’d actually lean toward this uniform being used in that afternoon commemorative game against the Canes in December, seems it fits the story better. But who knows, it could be brought out for both.
Obviously this is very-much speculation at this point, but for a while now it’s seemed like a no-brainer for the Leafs to bring these threads out again, which is why I’m drawn to believe this could be true. I mean, just look at them. If done right, those could be the nicest special issue jerseys the team has ever put out there.
There are actually two ways the team could go with this jersey: The single ‘T’ design, or the 1918 version where it was placed over the team name (seen in the mock-ups above). Whichever road they (potentially) go down, this throwback would certainly be one worth plunking down a few dollars for.
