Auston Matthews has found his way into the record books again for the Leafs as he reached 500 points as a Leaf faster than any other player in franchise history.
Matthews’ 500th point comes in the form of a secondary assist on William Nylander’s rocket of a goal:
Nylander and Matthews remained tied for the team lead in points this season at 43 now, with Nylander surprisingly having the goal lead this season (so far).
It has taken Matthews 445 games to reach 500 points, and so far the breakdown of points is 277 goals and 223 assists.
There has been a lot of discussion about whether it would be Marner or Matthews that would first reach 500 points this year and Marner is presently sitting at 497 points. Marner has played 465 games so Auston Matthews 445 games record isn’t in jeopardy.
Matthews also reached the 500 point plateau the fifth fastest out of active players. He is also presently 12th on the Leafs all-time scoring list and is only 37 points out of the top 10 (he would need to pass Tomas Kaberle and Rick Vaive.)
It pretty much goes without saying that Auston Matthews is one of the most special players to slip on a Leafs jersey and if his next contract keeps him in Toronto (it most likely will) he should hold every franchise scoring record by the time his career is done.
