The Toronto Maple Leafs are playing back-to-back twice this week, so it will be interesting to see whether they can continue a trend of taking care of the front-end game without too much drama.
The Maple Leafs are listed as -200 favourites while the Columbus Blue Jackets are +170 underdogs with a 6.5-goal total on the NHL odds for Monday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. Toronto, which will travel out immediately after the game to meet the Boston Bruins on Tuesday, is 12-4 in its last 16 games when it was playing the following day. The total has gone UNDER in six of the Maple Leafs’ last nine games when they were also playing the following day.

The Blue Jackets are 3-3-2 so far this season and are ranked 29th in the NHL in goal scoring (2.25 per game). Those struggles, along with the notable presence of Seth Jones and Zach Werenski on defense, are a reason why the total has finished UNDER in six of the Blue Jackets’ eight games so far this season, including a home defeat against the Maple Leafs on August 4.
Columbus is 17th in the NHL in goals against (3.25), while boasting the 25th-ranked power play (13.0 per cent) and 21st-ranked penalty kill (73.9). The total has also gone UNDER at sports betting sites in both five of the Maple Leafs’ last seven home games against the Metropolitan Division as well as seven of the Blue Jackets’ last 11 away games against the Atlantic Division.
Goalie Joonas Korpisalo is 3-2-1 with a 2.66 goals-against average and .905 save percentage in six games.
The Maple Leafs are 5-3-1, largely on the margin of their even-strength play, as defenseman Morgan Rielly, right wing Mitch Marner, center Auston Matthews and others are fuelling the NHL’s third-ranked offence (3.89 goals per game). The attack is also sixth in the league in shots per game, even though the Maple Leafs’ ninth-ranked power play (26.9 per cent) has had few opportunities of late, with just one man advantage in their past two games.
Matthews having just two points in his last four games is also an individual concern to totals-minded bettors. The Maple Leafs are 19th in goals against (3.33 per game) and 17th in penalty killing (79.3 per cent).
Frederik Andersen, who is 5-2-0 with a 3.09 GAA and .902 save percentage, is coming off a 43-save game on Saturday and it stands to reason he would start again. Toronto coach Mike Babcock usually starts Andersen in the first game of back-to-backs.
Following the Boston game on Tuesday, the Maple Leafs host the San Jose Sharks on Friday and visit the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday.
