Auston Matthews was not even part of the Toronto Maple Leafs the last time they defeated the St. Louis Blues, but they have the good omen that is a big number on their side of the scoreboard during their last outing.
The Maple Leafs are a -130 home favourite (wager $130 to win $100) on the NHL odds against the +110 underdog St. Louis (wager $100 to win $110) with a 6.5-goal total for Monday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. The Leafs are 0-6 in their last six games against the Blues, whom they see only twice per season. But they are 12-8 in their last 20 regular-season home games as a -120 to -150 moneyline favourite, with the total going UNDER in eight of the 10 most recent games in that sample. The Blues are 7-2 in their last nine away games as an underdog of +110 to +150 on the moneyline.
Blues at Maple Leafs | OddsShark Matchup Report
The reigning Stanley Cup champion Blues went 1-0-1 during a season-opening two-game homestand, including a 3-2 win against the Dallas Stars on Saturday in a rematch from the 2019 playoffs. The total has gone UNDER in 12 of St. Louis’s last 20 away games against the Eastern Conference at sports betting sites and one might expect they will be sound structurally in their first game of a four-game road trip. However, the Blues’ Brayden Schenn-centered first line has struggled to generate offence during its first two games, and the Ryan O’Reilly-helmed second line will likely be preoccupied by trying to slow down John Tavares and cohorts.
Jordan Binnington, who has a 2.44 goals-against average and .921 save percentage in two starts, will likely be in goal for St. Louis.
The Maple Leafs are 2-0-1 after a 6-5 shootout loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday where they allowed four third-period goals. As much as that collapse stung for Toronto fans, the Maple Leafs are 22-8 in their last 30 games after scoring five or more goals in their previous outing. The total has also gone OVER in four of Toronto’s last home games against the Western Conference, so it could be another friendly offensive environment for Matthews, who has five goals in three games. The Tavares-Kasperi Kapanen-Mitch Marner line combined for only one point and nine shots on goal against Montreal and will be seeking a greater reward.
Frederik Andersen, who has a 2.00 GAA and .927 save percentage through two winning starts, is expected to be back in goal after Michael Hutchinson faced Montreal.
Monday’s game concludes a busy stretch of four games in six days for the Maple Leafs, who have two days off before hosting the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday.
