It took a few short hours, but already, Craig Berube was spotted in public in Toronto.
On Tuesday night, a photo of the new head coach, Brad Treliving, and Brendan Shanahan having dinner went viral. Suffice it is to say, Berube will find out very quickly that he’s not in St. Louis anymore.
Naturally, that’s how we kicked off the Wednesday edition of Leafs Morning Take. We talk about Toronto being a different animal. There’s no doubt about it. After that, we got into this weird story out of Carolina about Martin Necas. Apparently, his dad has been very vocal in the Czechia media about his son’s current contractual status and power play time. Funny enough, Canes GM Don Waddell and head coach Rod Brind’Amour were asked about that in their season ending press conference. Unsurprisingly, they took the high road. It’s amazing how entitled players have become around the NHL. Wild times.
Presented by Greta Bar YYZ, which is bracing for Wing Wednesday, the opening segment focused on the Nashville Predators. On Tuesday, they made some headlines when they dealt veteran blueliner Ryan McDonagh back to Tampa Bay. In making the move, the Preds freed up an additional $6.75 million in cap space and now have roughly $26 million to play with this summer. With that in mind, the move led Tennessean reporter Alex Daughtery to ask Trotz about his potential interest in trading for Mitch Marner. The future Hall-of-Famer downplayed the notion calling it a mere “rumour.” At any rate, we went on to break down some potential spots for Marner to go, and for some reason, everything just kept coming back to Music City. They do make a lot of sense on paper.
After that, made possible by Wendy’s, we played our interview with Blues captain Brayden Schenn. The 32-year-old, who played under Craig Berube in St. Louis, offered up an all-encompassing 411 on his former head coach.
