Some recent mastery of their historical rival has sapped the Toronto Maple Leafs’ betting value, but they will take a pronounced totals trend into the tail end of their first back-to-back of the young season.
The Maple Leafs are a home favorite against the underdog Montreal Canadiens with a 6.0-goal total on the NHL odds for Saturday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. Toronto is 7-1 in its last eight games against Montreal. The Maple Leafs are coming off of a 4-1 road win against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday and the total has gone UNDER in seven of their last 10 home games when they played the previous day. The total has also gone UNDER in 18 of their last 30 games when they played the previous day.

The Canadiens earned the so-called Bettman Point in their season opener on Thursday, suffering a 4-3 shootout loss against the Carolina Hurricanes. Montreal, which has spread out right wing Brendan Gallagher, center Max Domi and left wing Jonathan Drouin over its first three lines in the hope of creating a balanced attack, has struggled as a big road underdog, going 4-16 in their last 20 away games as a moneyline underdog of +150 or more at sports betting sites. Veteran goalie Carey Price was busy against Carolina, making 40 saves, and he will likely start again on Saturday.
The Maple Leafs, on the other hand, are 12-4 in their last 16 home games as a favorite of -200 to -500 on the moneyline. Backup goalie Michael Hutchinson, who appeared in only five games for Toronto last season with a 2.64 goals-against average and .914 save percentage, is expected to start after Frederik Andersen played in Columbus. The combination of backup goalie and playing the third game of a 4-in-6 stretch might lead to the Maple Leafs being more defensively oriented. Both John Tavares’ line with Mitch Marner on the right wing and Auston Matthews’ line were rewarded for the effort in Columbus, as Marner had three points while Matthews scored his third goal in two games.
The Maple Leafs host the St. Louis Blues on Monday.
