Capitals at Maple Leafs | OddsShark Matchup Report

The Capitals are 8-2-3 so far this season, although they have only-OK underlying numbers, ranking 12th in the 31-team NHL in shot percentage at five-on-five at 50.51 percent. Washington, which has had the total finish OVER at betting sites in its last four games against the Atlantic Division, has excellent offensive balance with the Nicklas Backstrom-Alex Ovechkin-T.J. Oshie first line spearheading the NHL’s third-ranked offense (3.77 goals per game).
Defensively, the Capitals are 22nd in goals against (3.31) while the power play ranks ninth (25.0 percent) and the penalty killing unit ranks eighth (84.8). Braden Holtby, who is 4-1-3 with a 3.64 goals-against average and .886 save percentage in nine games, should be slated to start for Washington.
The Maple Leafs are 6-5-2, due in part to a front-loaded schedule where they played 13 games in 24 days. Despite that, Toronto is a solid seventh in shot percentage at five-on-five at 52.66 percent, suggesting better times might be just around the corner. While the absence of centre John Tavares (centre) has led to some line juggling for the Maple Leafs’ top six that is built around centre Auston Matthews and right wing Mitch Marner, Toronto still boasts the NHL’s sixth-ranked offence (3.54 goals per game).
On the back end, defenseman Travis Dermott will make his season debut for a unit ranked 24th in goals against (3.38). On special teams, Toronto’s power play is ranked 16th (21.1 percent) and its penalty killing unit is ranked 22nd (78.0).
Frederik Andersen, who is 6-2-1 with a 2.94 goals-against average and .904 save percentage in nine games this season, should start for Toronto after backup Michael Hutchinson played in Montreal on Saturday.
The Maple Leafs’ next action is at home against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday.
