After finishing up a strong season in Sweden with Frölunda HC, Carl Grundström will travel across the pond to join the Toronto Marlies for their playoff run.
Grundström, who was selected in the second round of the 2016 draft by the Leafs, scored 20 points in 45 games in the SHL this season. He also put up seven points in seven games with Sweden at the World Juniors, helping the team to a silver medal.
The Marlies are the best team in the AHL and are a strong candidate to take home the Calder Cup. Their lineup is loaded with talent, but there should be a spot for Grundström to fill in. It’ll be an excellent way for him to get acclimatized to the North American game on a competitive team during their most exciting time of the year.
A very hard working winger and great team player. Grundström plays an aggressive in-your-face type of game with plenty of intensity. Is strong on his skates, forechecks well and is very valuable on the penalty kill. He is not the most technically skilled player, but will chip in offensively and reads the game fairly well. Does a great job around the crease and along the boards. Great character with good timing in his hits. (EP 2016)
While he isn’t a prospect who gets much attention, Grundström is a player who could realistically crack the Leafs at some point next season. With Leo Komarov possibly leaving as a free agent, the gritty Grundström could fill into his role as an agitator who can chip in offensively.
