On Sunday, the Leafs beat the Red Wings so they went out and traded away Petr Mrazek.
Last night, the Leafs beat the Bruins so they went out and traded a lot of things (Ryan Spooner, Matt Beleskey, Ryan Lindgren, a first-round pick in this year’s draft and a 7th round pick in next year’s draft.)
Seems plausible, right?
Let’s go through the details of what ended up being Spooner’s last game in the Yellow & Black.

1-0 Boston (Brad Marchand goal)

Definitely a bit of an “ugh” moment. Brad Marchand, who’s universally one of the least-liked players in the league, opening the scoring on your own turf? Not ideal. The Leafs get caught here and it’s an early deficit to the Bruins.

1-1 (Mitch Marner goal)

Mitch Marner’s really changed his tune this season, hey? Scoring his 16th goal of the year as he’s now apparently a goal-per-game kinda guy, the goal was sparked by a beautiful pass from the Leafs’ new apparent first-line centre, William Nylander? It’s not a prototypical Mitch Marner “patience” goal, but it’s a heck of a shot and that’s enough to get things going.

2-1 Leafs (Nazem Kadri goal)

Reunited with Mitch Marner again on the power play, Nazem Kadri would waste no time putting the Buds ahead in this one. Just seven seconds into the powerplay, Naz would hop on a rebound and give Toronto their first lead of the night.

2-2 (Brad Marchand goal)

This guy, again?

3-2 (Jake DeBrusk goal)

Ah, the last point of Ryan Spooner’s Boston Bruins career.

3-3 (Nazem Kadri goal)

THIS GUY, AGAIN!

4-3 Leafs (Ron Hainsey goal)

Though he hasn’t exactly been a beacon of offensive production this season, Ron Hainsey came through with a timely blast here to seal the game for the Leafs in regulation.
The big debate comes on the challenged goaltender interference from Zach Hyman… which I mean, it’s not hard to see the case for, but ultimately it wasn’t enough for the refs to overturn the call.
The Leafs win their third game of the season over Boston, all of which Auston Matthews was out of the lineup for. Goodnight. See you in round one.
