Who knows how long the Toronto Maple Leafs will stay in a defensive mode, but what is enduring is their ability to close the deal in front end of back-to-back games.
The Maple Leafs are the -165 home favourite while the Philadelphia Flyers come back as a +145 away underdog with a 6.5-goal total on the NHL odds for Saturday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. Toronto, which will jet out afterward to visit the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday, is 12-4 in its last 16 games when it was also slated to play the next day. The total has also gone OVER at online sports betting sites in nine of the Maple Leafs’ last 12 home games as a -150 to -200 moneyline favourite. The Flyers are 4-12 in their last 16 away games as an underdog of +130 or more and the total has finished OVER 10 times.

Flyers at Maple Leafs | OddsShark Matchup Report

The Flyers, who are 8-5-2 so far this season, also play on Sunday (at home to the Boston Bruins) and they are 3-10 in their last 13 games when they also play the next day. Thanks to a balanced attack led by Sean Couturier and Claude Giroux, Philadelphia ranks second in the 31-team NHL in 5-on-5 shot-attempt percentage (54.53 per cent), forcing opponents to be extremely efficient offensively. The Flyers are 11th in goals scored (3.27 per game) and 17th in goals against (3.07). On special teams, their power play stands 11th (21.7 percent) in the league while their penalty killing is 12th (83.7).
Carter Hart, Philadelphia’s expected starting goalie, is 5-3-1 with a 2.82 goals-against average and .889 save percentage.
The Maple Leafs are 9-5-3 this season, including a 4-1-1 mark across their last six games. Toronto has limited each of its last two opponents to one goal but those teams, the Vegas Golden Knights and Los Angeles Kings, are 16th and 27th in goals per game. Toronto, which is eighth in goals scored (3.25 per game) and 19th in goals against (3.12), might be due for the likes of Auston Matthews, William Nylander and Mitch Marner to break out offensively. Toronto’s power play did connect once in the Vegas game but ranks 21st in the league (17.2 percent), while the penalty killing is 24th (77.4).
Toronto usually has Frederik Andersen play the front end of back-to-back games and he is 9-2-2 with a 2.69 goals-against average and .914 save percentage this season.
Following Sunday’s game in Chicago, the Leafs will begin a 3-in-4 stretch by visiting the New York Islanders on Wednesday.
