Furies’ Cheverie Announced As Ryerson Rams Assistant Coach

It’s fair to say that Kori Cheverie, alternate captain of the Toronto Furies, has had a busy summer.
In July, she jetted off to the other side of the world as part of the Ryerson Skate Training Program on a two-week goodwill exchange to New Zealand. Cheverie attended the exchange along with fellow Ryerson Skate Training Instructor Vanessa Stratton, and the Leaside Wildcats girls hockey organization.
Cheverie and Stratton worked with the coaching staff of the New Zealand National Team, helping to grow the game in New Zealand, a country known for its love of sports, but not necessarily its love of hockey. Ryerson University and Ryerson Skate Training have held exchanges in the past for students who come from New Zealand’s summer months to the Canadian winter to train and develop their game.
The New Zealand U18 Women’s Team plays the Leaside Wildcats in a series of exhibition games that started on Friday, August 12, and will continue all weekend until Sunday, August 14. Cheverie will then return to Toronto and Ryerson University.
“They come over here to play during their summer vacation in order to develop, which is pretty cool… …They come to Ryerson Skate Training to train with us on the treadmill to add a unique piece to their development. It’s awesome that this time we get to bring Ryerson Skate Training to them!”
Then yesterday, August 12, Cheverie was announced as the new Assistant Coach of the Ryerson Rams Men’s Hockey Team. Previously a Skate Training Specialist with Ryerson Skate Training, Cheverie is creating history by taking the position, becoming the first ever female assistant coach in the history of CIS Hockey. The position comes as former assistant coach, Johnny Duco, steps into the Interim Head Coach position.
“Our men’s hockey program has made significant strides in their performance in the last several years. The addition of coach Kori to our coaching staff will provide much needed support to continue the momentum as we build towards a national championship program.”
