Furies Postgame: A Very CWHL Halloween

The Battle of the GTA is always a fun game to watch. The games are chippy, hard-fought, and heated, and tonight’s Toronto Furies vs Brampton Thunder matchup was no exception.
THE RUNDOWN
- Starting in net for the Furies is Sonja van der Bliek. Starting in net for the Thunder is Liz Knox.
- First period was a lot of back and forth, high energy hockey. Both teams testing each other out.
- Ella Stewart takes the first penalty of the game, two minutes for interference. A minute later, Sarah Edney gets called for hooking and its 4-on-4 hockey followed by a Furies power play.
- Edney, with an assist from Nicole Brown, scores the opening goal of the game a few minutes into the second period. 1-0 Thunder.
- Brampton’s Jess Jones takes a crosschecking penalty a little over halfway into the second, but the Thunder kill it off, keeping the score at 1-0.
- Furies’ Shannon Moulson gets called for interference and roughing and gets sent off for 4 minutes.
- Furies start the third period with 1:37 left on the Moulson penalty.
- Brampton’s Rebecca Vint scores 11 seconds into the third. 2-0 Thunder.
- Michela Cava takes an unfortunate tripping penalty late in the third, but the Furies kill it off.
- Final score: 2-0 Thunder.
BLUE WARRIOR
Tonight’s Blue Warrior is goaltender, Sonja van der Bliek. Van der Bliek stood tall against the Thunder tonight. She let in two of the 38 shots she faced and made some absolute highlight reel saves. Without her, this game could’ve gone so, so much worse.
SHOUTOUT
Tonight’s shoutout goes to Toronto Furies head coach Sommer West. With today’s game in the bag, Sommer becomes one of only three coaches in the CWHL, and the first female coach, to stand behind the bench for 100 CWHL games. Epic kudos to Sommer, who coached the Toronto Furies to their Clarkson Cup win in 2014, and hopefully, onto many more.
