Furies Postgame: GTA Rivalry Weekend, DIFD, and a tight loss for Toronto Furies

This weekend is a huge one for the Toronto Furies and the CWHL in general. It’s GTA Rivalry Weekend, which always proves to be an amazing match up. Tonight’s game at the Brampton Memorial Arena is in honour of DIFD, a youth mental health initiative. Tomorrow’s game, in Barrie, is part of Roger’s Hometown Hockey.
THE RUNDOWN
- Starting in goal for the Toronto Furies is Christina Kessler. Starting in goal for the Brampton Thunder is Liz Knox.
- Brampton’s Shannon Macaulay takes an early penalty and sits for 2 minutes for roughing.
- Toronto’s Julie Allen takes a penalty not long after and sits for 2 minutes for interference.
- Brampton’s Rebecca Vint gets sent to the box for 2 minutes for an illegal check to the head – it’s followed up by a 10 minute misconduct.
- At 9:43 in the first period, Brampton’s Laura Stacey breaks open the scoring with a shorthanded goal with assists from Macaulay and Sarah Edney. 1-0 Brampton
- Jocelyne Larocque heads to the box for 2 minutes for roughing, making it 5-on-3 Toronto.
- Second period begins with a lot of back and forth from both teams.
- Toronto’s Erin Ambrose takes a penalty and sits for 2 minutes for body contact.
- Toronto’s Natalie Spooner takes a penalty soon after and sits for 2 minutes for hooking, making it 5-on-3 Brampton.
- Brampton’s Edney scores a powerplay goal at 13:59. 2-0 Brampton.
- Toronto’s Kelly Terry cuts the lead in half with assists from Jenelle Kohanchuk and Emily Fulton. 2-1 Brampton.
- An almost-goal is scored by Toronto’s Spooner. Officials gather to discuss the play, but ultimately, no goal is called.
- Brampton’s Becca King scores late in the second. 3-1 Brampton.
- Toronto’s Renata Fast gets called for a rather questionable tripping penalty and sits for 2 minutes with 1:39 left in the second. Furies will start the third on the penalty kill.
- Toronto and Brampton both take coincidental penalties for slashing and crosschecking respectively at 11:25 in the third.
- Toronto’s Spooner scores with an assist from Tanis Lamoureux at 9:08 of the third period. 3-2 Brampton.
- Brampton’s Larocque heads to the box for 2 minutes for delay of game.
- Toronto pulls their goalie with just under 2 minutes remaining in the period.
- Toronto and Brampton both take coincidental penalties for roughing with 1:09 left in the third.
- Brampton’s Stacey with the empty net goal with just under a minute left to play. 4-2 Brampton.
BLUE WARRIOR
Tonight’s Blue Warrior goes to Furies’ Captain, Natalie Spooner. Spooner scored one of the two Toronto goals, and would’ve made it a second, were it not for the no-goal ruling in the second period. Spooner led her team well and kept them in it to the bitter end.
SHOUTOUT
Tonight’s shoutout doesn’t go to a particular player or aspect of play. It goes to the charity being supported by the Brampton Thunder. DIFD (Do It For Daron) is a youth initiative encouraging young people to talk openly about mental illness and especially to seek help when they need it. The Brampton Thunder auctioned off dedicated warm up jerseys and donated proceeds to DIFD. They, and DIFD themselves, get my shoutout tonight. #weallskatetogether
COMING UP NEXT
Day 2 of the GTA Rivalry Weekend comes tomorrow, Sunday December 3rd. The Furies travel to Barrie, ON with the Brampton Thunder to play at East Bayfield Arena as a part of Rogers Hometown Hockey.The puck drops at 1:30pm.
