The Toronto Maple Leafs are not exactly trending upward as they embark on the middle game of a three-game homestand.
The Maple Leafs are the -130 home favourite while the Vegas Golden Knights come back as a +110 away underdog with a 6.0-goal total on the NHL odds for Thursday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. Toronto is just 2-7 in its last nine regular-season home games as a -110 to -150 moneyline favourite, with the total finishing OVER in five of the six most recent games in that sample. But Vegas is 3-12 in its last 15 regular-season games as an away underdog, with the total finishing UNDER in nine of those games at betting sites.

The Golden Knights are 9-5-0 so far this season and have seven wins when leading after the first period, which is second in the NHL. Vegas, whose offensive attack is spearheaded by centers William Karlsson and Paul Stastny, is 13th in the 31-team NHL in 5-on-5 shot-attempt percentage (50.84 per cent), which is right in line with being 16th in goals scored (3.06 per game) and 14th in goals against (2.88). The Golden Knights’ seventh-ranked power play (23.6 per cent) and second-ranked penalty killing unit (89.8) could pose problems for the Leafs.
Vegas goalie Marc-Andre Fleury is 9-3-1 with a 2.40 goals-against average and .924 save percentage so far this season, but over his career he has a 3.00 GAA and .897 save percentage against Toronto. The latter is his lowest against any NHL team.
The Maple Leafs are 8-5-3 so far this season and come in on a modest two-win streak, including a 3-1 victory against the lowly Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday. Toronto has been struggling to turn the NHL’s seventh-best 5-on-5 shot-attempt percentage (52.19 per cent) into consistent production, although center Auston Matthews and right wing William Nylander are coming off two-point games while right wing Kasperi Kapanen has also generated scoring opportunities at a high rate of late.
The Leafs are seventh in goals scored (3.44 per game) and 21st in goals against (3.25). The absence of center John Tavares, who is in his second game back, had led to Toronto’s power play being ranked 20th (17.3 percent) while the penalty killing unit is ranked 26th (75.4).
Toronto goalie Frederik Andersen, who is 8-2-2 with a 2.84 goals-against average and .908 save percentage, should receive another start after playing on Tuesday.
The Maple Leafs’ next game is at home against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday.
