Hell yeah. Patrick Marleau attended the San Jose Sharks “Captains’ Ice Session” today in San Jose with his old friends, but opted to rock some new flavour.
I know, it isn’t all that exciting. We want to see him wearing a real Leafs jersey, but unfortunately it’s August and this is all we have due to it being the dog days of summer.
But still! Patrick Marleau is a Maple Leaf. That’s a cool thing, and these three photos from a late-August screw-around ice session are another reminder that this, in fact, is a real thing.
Also, since we’re on the topic of Marleau and the Leafs, a couple of his former teammates spoke at BioSteel camp about how surprised they are that the former Sharks captain took his talents to Toronto.
“Definitely pretty surprised,” Sharks forward Joel Ward said, according to NHL.com’s Dave McCarthy. “I was hoping he would stay, for sure. He was a big help for us, on and off the ice. It’s definitely going to be a big blow for us.”
Jason Demers, another former Shark and current Florida Panther echoed Ward’s sentiments.
“That was crazy,” Demers said. “For him to make that decision, I know him well personally and I know that was probably the biggest decision of his career. I don’t think anybody understands on the outside how big of a decision that was for him.
“In my head, after talking to him a little bit, I thought he was going to stay. But I think him and his family discussed it and I think it’s going to be a great thing for him.”
We agree, Jason. And it’s going to be a great thing for the Leafs, too.
